Chicago IL is called the windy city, December to March the average wind speed is 6 mph, however Boston MA is windier, December to March the average wind speed is 7 mph.

For my town of Walpole the next 4 days the wind is going to be 12-15 mph and then after that it drops to 10 mph for the next 10 days, to me that really affects bird photography not to mention with the temps in the mid 30's the wind chill cuts right through you.

It seems to be that the birds don't fly unless they have to.

What it is like in your area

I live in central Indiana. Looking at the extended forecast, winds are above 10 MPH for all but one day in the 14 day forecast. It is only NOT windy out here in corn country when the temperature is above 90, and below 0. We have two freakishly large Golden Retrievers who (yes, they are people) go on a 2 mile walk, twice each weekday, and one 4 mile walk on Saturday and Sunday. Cold I can dress for, hot doesn't matter. The worst is those really lousy days when it cold and blowing and raining or snowing. A good walk when it is -10 with no snow or wind is way better than 30 degrees, 20mpg wind, and freezing rain.

We use the Beaufort scale: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale (external link)

The last couple of weekends we had wind-force 8 to 10(39-63mph). Birds were either going very fast or almost backwards :p Even perched they had trouble, I posted a few with feathers blown everywhere from my garden in the 'post your birds' thread.

I live in Belmont CA, 20 miles to the south of San Francisco, on the western edge of the SF Bay.

The weather forecast for today that wind speeds range between 2-7mph, coming from different angles of the compass depending upon what time of the day, shifting from NE to W winds.

But looking out over the next 9 days, the forecasted max winds are 7mph, 5mph, 9mph, 20mph, 18mph, 12mph, 12mph, 9mph, 9mph

During the year the wind will average from 8-10mph, the 75th percentile is 9-11mph, the 90th percentile within 12-16mph

As stated above, I live in central Indiana. We occasionally get 40+ MPH winds with gusts to 60+ MPH ON OTHERWISE BRIGHT SUNNY DAYS. I've seen that in south-central Oklahoma, too. What about the rest of the world?

It's often bright, sunny, and very windy after a strong front goes through. That's happening here (central MD) today; thunderstorm last night, including a strong lightning strike within 1/8th of a mile that got our attention, followed by temps 15-20 degrees lower and winds 25mph with gusts to 50. It won't settle down until 8am tomorrow.

Where I work in Toronto, people have seen parked rental bicycles staying vertically in the wind.

Just looked up the background behind the name 'Windy City'..Wikipedia says

"Weather
While Chicago is widely known as the "Windy City", it is not the windiest city in the United States. Some of the windier cities recorded by the NOAA/NCDC are Dodge City, Kansas, at 13.9 mph (22.3 km/h);[2] Amarillo, Texas, at 13.5 mph (21.7 km/h);[2] and Lubbock, Texas, at 12.4 mph (20 km/h).[3] Chicago is not significantly windier than any other U.S. city. For example, the average annual wind speed of Chicago is 10.3 mph (16.6 km/h); Boston: 12.4 mph (20.0 km/h); Central Park, New York City: 9.3 mph (15.0 km/h); and Los Angeles: 7.5 mph (12.1 km/h).[4]

The following "windy city" explanation involving a "wind tunnel" effect is from the Freeborn County Standard of Albert Lea, Minnesota, on November 20, 1892:[5]

"Chicago has been called the "windy" city, the term being used metaphorically to make out that Chicagoans were braggarts. The city is losing this reputation, for the reason that as people got used to it they found most of her claims to be backed up by facts. As usual, people go to extremes in this thing also, and one can tell a stranger almost anything about Chicago today and feel that he believes it implicitly.
But in another sense Chicago is actually earning the title of the "windy" city. It is one of the effects of the tall buildings which engineers and architects apparently did not foresee that the wind is sucked down into the streets. Walk past the Masonic Temple or the Auditorium any day even though it may be perfectly calm elsewhere, and you will meet with a lively breeze at the base of the building that will compel you to put your hand to your hat."

I spent a year on Shemya island in the Aleutians and it's the windiest place I've ever been. We once had straight line winds well over 100mph.

According to an online source (accuracy unknown), the average wind speed in my village is 12.7 mph. The average speed in Shetland is just under 17 mph according to the met office.

Denver. In general not too bad to very light, but when it does blow it can be bad in isolated areas.

The mountains this year have been windy, and at 13,000ft, that can get cold in a hurry, not to mention potentially dangerous - I've had instances where I had to hit the ground or risk being blown off my feet and down a slope.

However, this week it seems to have gotten better. Last Friday I was at 13,400ft at sunset with not a breath of wind.
