How many of you guys with the Canon EOS R out there are using the Canon 50mm 1.2 L ? Is it worth picking up I’m not looking to spend over 2G for the Canon RF 50 even though it’s a amazing lens . Thanks for any information would love to see sample images if possible.

Don't own either, but it's the combo I tested when I was looking at the R. I was impressed both by how quickly it AF and how well it locked on and tracked. Images were quite pleasing and sharp.

It actually works very well indeed. With the EOS R, any OOF shots are basically user error, or deliberate :).

I've had the EF 50L for many years, but I did eventually exchange it for an RF50L, when I saw what the EOS R could do with the EF 50L.
The 50L really needs stopping down to F/2.8 for optimal quality, unless you are deliberately looking for the softer outer areas of the frame at larger apertures. It does render absolutely beautifully, and even works well with an extension tube for (semi)macrophotography :). If you are a 50 mm shooter, it can only be recommended, IMO.

Even so, with the RF-version it only gets better ;).

Kind regards, Wim

Thanks for the info the RF 50 is amazing I’ve tried it . But I’m not a professional photographer. I do shoot some party’s and a couple of families a year. But that price for the RF50 and the size is crazy .

I have tried the RF50 on the R....amazing lens and after using one for about an hour i knew immediately WHY everyone is going to change to mirrorless and use R glass........Zeiss otus quality for 1/2 the price....Yes its that good...optics are phenominal. R glass that I have seen is better than version 2 L glass.....I have a 24-70V2 that is use a ton....its so sharp and I can adapt to the R mounts with the adapter.....Really hard for me to believe the R24-70 will be that much better......But it will be that much better....count on it

The trick with Canon R glass is to get a body that will work for your needs and buy slowly into the R lens line up...The RF50 is a great place to start....for me...Im looking for a 105mm 1.4 R mount from Canon and I will get the R24-105 lens for sure.......I will adapt everything else I have.

I am not a pro photographer either, but I am definitely a 50 mm shooter. Basically, because I did buy a plethora of lenses over time, I just exchanged a bunch to get the RF 50L and the RF 85L, replacing amongst others my EF 50 F/1.2L and my EF 85L II.

The latter is a no-brainer, as it has better OOF transitions both in background and foreground, as is crazy sharp from F/1.2, vs F/2 with the EF version, and a very similar rendition otherwise. The 50L not so necessarily, as the character of the EF F/1.2L is different to the RF 50L. As mentioned, the RF 50L is really extremely good, but I guess I could have lived with the EF 50 F/1.2L as well. Actually, I am considering buyng one again, as an addition to the RF 50L :). You do need to make sure it works well, however: I had mine recalibrated by Canon with very specific instructions: it had some back-focus until F/2.8 (used to be a common problem in the early years), but with my instructions they managed to get it 100% at all f-stops. No idea if since then the AF-algorithms have been adapted to make it work 100% straight out of the box, however.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

You guys are awesome. I will evently start buying RF lens waiting for Sigma to see what there coming out with, then I will decide on what glass I will start buying. I do love Canons L glass owning several EF L lens already, and am a fan of the Sigma Art lens.

I use a 50mm prime a lot when shooting family gatherings, and have owned a 50L for quite a few years to use with my 5D3. I picked up an EOS R during the holiday sales, and have been very pleased with my EF 50L adapted to the new mount. It's given new life to the lens. I have read terrific things about the RF 50L, but as an amateur who uses a 50mm prime less than my "go to" lenses, I just cannot justify the price tag on the RF version. If the prices eventually drop and I can pick up a used or refurbished version for under $1,500 I may consider upgrading. For now, though, I am very satisfied with using the EF version on the R mount.

Here is a shot of our grand nephew during a Christmas gathering.

I own the eos r and all i use is my EF lenses on it. To be honest the 50mm f1.2 is on my R 90% of the time. The EF 50mm f1.2 is great on the R. The only thing i can say and it should come as to no surprise is the noticeable chromatic aberration that this lens is known for. It doesn't bother me much but it may to others. But getting more infocus shots at f1.2 is awesome.
