Well, actually it is of SOME use to know that the issue you have experienced is 'not always'...so then comes the sleuthing to figure out when it happens vs. not.

  • could be lens related (e.g. not R lens, but adapted)
  • could be if AF achieved related
  • could be lens manufacturer related (aftermarket vs. Canon)
  • could be related to the cycle of the moon, or something equally mysterious

:-) We know that something you had experienced had given you the impression of 'unsuitable for sports'

Most likely point one or four :-). Not three because I use Canon lenses. The next time it happens I'll note the circumstances.

I replaced my 80D with the EOS R and overall I am still extremely happy with it. I was wanting full frame bokeh, image quality for landscapes and portraits, low light sensitivity was the biggest thing I was looking for. All of these things are amazing. There are things I didn’t even consider such as eye autofocus, absolutely amazing , the auto focus (on not fast subjects) is absolutely spot on, the camera is amazing.

However, I have been thoroughly underwhelmed with fast action stuff. My 80D was much better for sports. I cannot afford a 1DXIII, which would give me everything, but I could afford a 7DmkII used of course to pair with my EOS R. I hope that will give me the best of both worlds. I will be picking up the 7DmkII this coming Friday.

All that being said I wouldn’t give up My R for anything short of the 1DXIII or the EOS R5.

My kit : Canon EOS R6 and EOS R, RF 24-105mm f/4 IS L, EF‑S 16-35mm F4 L, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, EF 70–200mm f/2.8L IS III, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM, Sigma 35mm Art f/1.4, Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II, 600exII-RT, 580EX II. Gitzo GT2542 and RRS BH-55, Peak Designs Carbon Fiber Tripod, Think Tank MindShift BackLight 36L and 26L, and Think Tank Retrospective V20 2.0.

I bought a EOS R + RF 24-105 f/4 L during the holiday sales and am still happy with the camera. I also picked up the RF 35mm f/1.8 for the body. In my case, it is replacing a 5D3 that I used for just about everything except wildlife and moving subjects -- I own a 7D2 for those purposes. I have mostly shot landscapes and family gatherings so far with the R. It has worked great with the two EF lenses I have used so far -- my 50L and 16-35 f/4 L. I haven't even mounted my two telephotos on the body -- I use them pretty much exclusively on the 7D2. I still need to put the 5D3 & EF 24-105 f/4 L up for sale (I've been too busy to deal with it yet).

I am exceedingly satisfied with my choice to switch from a 7DII to an EOS R about a year ago. I shoot mostly landscapes these days, so it's limitations are a non issue for me and the flexibility it provides is great. I have two big wishes. First, I'd like canon to release an RF 15-35mm f/4 IS lens in a similar form factor to the RF 24-105mm f/4 IS. I'm currently using an EF 16-35mm f/4 IS with an adapter and it's considerably longer than I'd like. Second, I'd like to be able to afford to pick up an RF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS because it's so much lighter and more compact than my EF version. Because I'm typically hiking long distances with my kit, the weight and space it takes up in my bag is a huge factor for me.
