I asked this on the XN-View forum but must not have been clear enough in my question as the answers I got did not makes things very clear to me.

In XN-View "Settings" in the "General" section under the "File Operations" tab, down at the bottom, is "Keep original Date/Time", with three check-boxes to select or not.

My question is: In this context, what is XN-View's definition of "Original Date/Time" ?

Are they meaning the original Date Taken stamp; or, are they meaning the Date Modified stamp ?

I definitely do not want the Date Taken to be messed with, which to my way of thinking would be the "Original" time; but, I do want the Date Modified to be updated.

I hope I worded this in a way that makes sense.

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

maybe just save a file to another name and look up the exif.
No matter what people tell you this might be the better way to go.
I can't help you as I don't have that program

Thanks; I will try a handful of sample files with the boxes checked and then unchecked and see how it goes.

The reason this is sort of important is that my back-up program has an option, "Skip Files with Same Time Stamp"
If I leave that option unchecked, it takes forever and a day to make a back-up; but, with it checked, I am beginning to suspect that additional EXIF information that I have added is not making the trip.

Thanks again; I copied a few test files to a test folder, made note as to both the Date Taken and Last Modified; and, leaving all the boxes checked as they had been all along, I performed a few changes to the metadata.
I checked the time stamps and neither had changed.
I then unchecked the boxes and performed some more changes to the metadata.
This time, when I checked the EXIF, my Date Taken were unmolested and the Last Modified had been updated to match the time of the operation = just like I wanted.

I did the same with digiKam and changed the settings to behave the same way.

Now, I just need to make a run with my back-up program with the "Skip Files with Same Timestamp" unchecked and that should get things all back on track.

FYI, the original "date taken" is always retained (unless the EXIF data is completely removed). I don' kmow why photo viewers don't make use of it. Just upload ar file to Exif Info.org (external link) and you will see it entitled Date/Time Original
