I am planning on getting REAL SOON either the Sigma Contemporary or the Tamron version of the 150-600mm lens.

I initially was thinking Sigma only, but right now Sigma is out of stock. Yes I do know Adorama (and probably other locations) has them, but I want to go to a brick and mortar store to be able to trade in my older Sigma 150-500mm lens.

I have talked to a couple Camera stores, one of the stores told me that optically they are close to being the same quality, but the Tamron has a better Image Stabilizer than Sigma has.

What are your thoughts of either of these lenses?

I know I have more questions, but right now they are not coming to my brain!

Thank you!

I have the Sigma lens and I love it. It is a good lens for the price. Check B&H to see if they have it in stock.

Charles,
You could sell your old lens to KEH or MPB. Regardless of what retailer you sell it to you'll only get wholesale for it.

I checked B&H, right now they are out of stock hoping to have more in 7-14 days.

But as I said I would prefer to deal with a brick and mortar store.

I have heard of KEH, but have never dealt with them. MPB I have never heard of before.

Yes I know I won't get much for my lens, maybe $200 or less.

I'm very happy with my Sigma. Stabilizer is actually quite good. I get a lot of great images at 1/100 handheld even on my 5DsR.

What customisation doe the Tamron offer?
Sigma provides options for OS, AF and focus range limits.
Custom settings, C1 and C2 as well as OFF can be selected by switch in the field.
Adjustable focus range limits is something I like.

I have not heard of any of this. Do you own the Sigma?

What do these options give you? What is focus range limits? Right now I do not remember what OS is... my mind is drawing a blank on OS....

Thank you for responding!

I don't own Sigma 150-600.
I do own Sigma 500 f4 which shares same customisation options.
OS is Sigma's term for stabilisation. (See your Sigma 150-500)
Most longer primes have focus range limiting (and other lenses)
eg Canon 70-200 2.8 has 2 settings. Bigger primes have 3. 100L macro also has 3.
Sigma 150-600 allows you to set focus range limit distances yourself, using the dock.
Canon 400 5.6 prime has 3.5metre and 8.5metre settings.
If shooting subjects that will not be closer than 8.5 metres, use that setting so lens will only try to AF between 8.5m and infinity instead of 3.5m to infinity.

There are 3 Modes for OS and 3 for AF.

Post it here, I'm sure someone would jump on it for that price!

First, image stabilization: Canon calls it IS; Sigma calls it OS; Tamron called it VC

Versions:

Tamron has the original aka G1 and the newer G2.
The original can't be used with the dock. You need to send it to tamron for firmware updates
The G2 can be updated using the dock
I have the original tamron 150-600 with original firmware = no panning mode with VC on
The copy I have is very soft after 500mm

Sigma has two versions: the contemporary and the sport
Both versions can use the dock
No personal experience with either.

Currently looking at the contemporary to replace my tamron.

Rod

Oh YES I do remember now Sigma using OS... don't get old!

Why does the lens need customizing of the focus range by the buyer?

I understand using the dock for software updates.

I did click on the link for the manual. Thank you for that.

The manual states:

For Full-time MF, set the focus mode switch on the lens to the “MO” position.

It seems to me if you want full time MF the switch should be set to MF

Do you know why they state what they do?

Thank you for this information!

I have never sold anything here on POTN, but I may try that perhaps at a slightly higher price than $200 to begin with.
