First, image stabilization: Canon calls it IS; Sigma calls it OS; Tamron called it VC

Versions:

Tamron has the original aka G1 and the newer G2.
The original can't be used with the dock. You need to send it to tamron for firmware updates
The G2 can be updated using the dock
I have the original tamron 150-600 with original firmware = no panning mode with VC on
The copy I have is very soft after 500mm

Sigma has two versions: the contemporary and the sport
Both versions can use the dock
No personal experience with either.

Currently looking at the contemporary to replace my tamron.

Rod

Thank you

I have the G1 Tamron 150-600. Bought it here in the classifieds section. I can take a picture of a car parked 4 houses down and read the fine print on his tires. Also performed very well at the local air show. It's a good used option if you're trying to keep costs down.

Why does the lens need customizing of the focus range by the buyer?

It does not need it. It is an option. An option I appreciate.

An obvious application would be for backyard bird photography which often has a very limited range of distances to subject.
If a feeder was setup 6 metres from shooting position, a range of 5-7 metres could be assigned to C1 or C2 switch positions.
Anytime the camera / lens failed to achieve focus, or human performance is less than perfect, the lens would only 'rack focus' over the very small range.
So rather than a painstaking wait while the lens focused all the way to infinity and back looking for the subject, focus could be achieved again much, much faster.

This makes photography far more enjoyable and increases chance of good results.

It seems to me if you want full time MF the switch should be set to MF

Just an option.
MF means the lens will not attempt to Autofocus.
MO is Manual Overide.

If the camera was set up for back button focus and MO is set on lens, user can decide if AF, MF or both is used.
If AF is set up to work with shutter button, user can MF after AF if it's suspected or obvious AF has not focused correctly.

Thank you very much! This information does make it sound like I will go for getting the Sigma over the Tamron!!

I do like the name Sigma better that the Tamron anyway! ;-)a

What customisation doe the Tamron offer?
Sigma provides options for OS, AF and focus range limits.
Custom settings, C1 and C2 as well as OFF can be selected by switch in the field.
Adjustable focus range limits is something I like.

Because of what you said here, I now own the Sigma 150-600C!!!!!

It arrived Wednesday 03/18/2020 but because of the weather I have not been able yet to try it out.

Rain Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday thru Monday partly cloudy so maybe one of those days I can try it out.

There is a LOT to learn about this lens!

Congrats. While you're waiting for the weather to clear you can load the latest firmware into it. I assume you got the USB dock.

I don’t now what camera this will be used on, but if it is a 7D2, loading the latest firmware onto the lens is not a good idea.

I can’t speak for other camera models.

Why?

The update makes the Dynamic OS pretty much unusable and you then need to stick on Standard.....refer to the posts about this in the thread about this lens

I dug through all references on POTN to "dynamic OS" and they all seem to be about a year old, some people have the problem & some don't.

The big problem is none of the posts refer to a specific version of firmware.

The latest Canon version is
Ver. 2.02
Update Date 2019.11.21

which is after all the complaints.

I will check tomorrow to see what version I am on. I suspect it is current. The issue started 2 versions back (whatever build number that was....we can’t go back so I can’t tell )
I for sure hit those of us with 7D2’s. I don’t know what other models were affected.
