Thx for that info, Jeff, but it seems to be perhaps urban legend according to the link to Pekka message about photo sizesl

Ah... 1600 x 1600 pixels, per Pekka, and no stated file size limits per se. Clear enough.

So I will simply stick to 1500, 1000 as easier to remember than 1600, 1066 that corresponds to 1.5:1 of the native dSLR frame!

I guess it would be worthwhile verifying by

  1. trying with a 1700 x 200 image, to exceed one dimensional limit
  2. then try with a >10MB file which has 1600 x 1600 pixels stored in high Quality JPG.

Well, here is a photo taken with a Canon S110 capturing RAW, that is sized 1800 x 1350 pixel output JPG, to exceed the 1600 pixel (each dimension) limit...
QUOTED IMAGE
...so it seems the 1600x1600 pixel limit is a lie, and it came from Pekka himself!

And I could not even make a photo with 1600x1600 pixels limit, any larger than 2.3MB even at the very highest JPG quality setting!

Lastly, I created an output JPG equal to camera native resolution 4000 x 3000, and at highest JPG quality, creating an 11MB file...this should make the POTN software barf, in theory

CURRENT IMAGE LIMITS

We currently allow 8 images to be embedded in a post. Embedded images must fit into 1600 x 1600 box, and be less than 2.5 MB in file size.

Clicking on the image results in a box: "zoom to 100%, (1440 x 1080.)"

  • The original JPG for that photo sent to Photobucket happens to still be sitting on my desktop. Properties: Details: "Dimensions 1800 x 1350".
  • Going back to Photobucket, were I uploaded that photo for linking on POTN, Photobucket also shows "Resolution: 1800 x 1350"
  • So then I downloaded a copy of the image from POTN, back to my desktop, and the properties: details: "Dimensions: 1440 x 1080"

So why the information got twisted by POTN is a puzzler; Pekka can probably explain.

But since it got truncated from 1800 pixels to 1440 pixels seems to be tacit evidence of my standard use of 1500 x 1000 pixels, regardless of the original sizee, is a sound one!

You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php
