It seems chloroquine and derivatives may not work so well, but more testing is being done:

I always doubt this sort of thing until proven to actually work.

The initial tests and clinical trials (cited earlier) were promising, but the expanded tests with a larger population suggests there is a minimal effect.

Then there is the case of an actual patient in the US treated with a med and claiming virtual cure from its use!

The issue with a single result or a small sample is that it many times does not scale to a large population. On to the next cure. It seems that bear bile (external link) is the next thing to try at least according to the experts.

Oh I do rather hope they synth the ursodeoxycholic acid rather than the old fashion way.

Only 16,600 ventilators, that’s the total number of machines that sit in the Strategic National Stockpile, the government reserve meant to fortify overwhelmed hospitals in a crisis.

Here in CA, we got a bunch of ventilators out of the stockpile, and it turned out that many were in storage for so long the batteries were dead and needed to be replaced. Gov Newsom said Saturday that 170 ventilators shipped by the federal government to help CA respond to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus were "not working" when they arrived. There is now an effort to begin battery replacements and then test the units; they were shipped from LA north to Silicon Valley for refurbishment.

Common sense tells me to test any machine, particularly vital medical equipment before shipping. But then, common sense is not so common :p

Wow. 700 NYPD officers test positive. 29 in the hospital. Another concern now. Crime. At least people are mostly off the streets and at home but that does not help businesses that are shut down. We are having a rash of business break-ins and our force is at full capacity.

Hope everyone, everywhere stays safe.

Failed? I wonder why?

Having worked on a project funded by the government I think I have a pretty good idea, but there is no way for me to to say without getting the thread locked again. Lets just say that the experience really opened my eyes on how government contracts work and where the vast bulk of the resources goes.

That article discloses the original government contract was given to a small company. The small company got bought by a large medical product company, and the project disappeared, making the government seek a new new company.

I posted a reply to someone's post about China's apparent love for Canada, exemplified by their shipment of a large quantity of Personal Protective Equipment to Canada fairly recently. In my reply, I pointed out that previously Canada had shipped a large quantity of PPE to China, so China was merely returning the favor to them, not that it was an apparent affection for Canada.

The other comment about China was their ejection of US press (on Mar 17). I pointed out that recently (on Mar 2) the US had made a decision to limit the number of Chinese citizens who can work in the United States for five state-run Chinese news organizations. IOW, it was a response to America limiting their press.

I wanted to make sure that it was on the record here about the reason WHY China had ejected US press...a response to an action by the US! I made the mistake of quoting the LA Times title of article (word for word) which mentions a specific name behind that decision, and the post was rejected by a Moderator as being too political. That was not the intention, sorry, I merely quoted our press in trying to get the accusations straightened out.

Really? Again?

When I was a kid we would take 78 rpm records and put them in boiling water. After a while you could shape them into ash trays or what have you. If you dropped one
it would shatter like glass. Most 78's are worthless so if you have one try it.
