We don't answer any number we don't recognize. We let ring out and 90% of the time no messages are left...

That is what we do too, much of the time. But it can be a mistake. Last week the phone rang and the call display said "Anonymous". I thought, what the hell, I will answer it and if there is dead air for more than 2 seconds, I will hang up. Well, it turned out to be our family doctor, in person. She has never phoned us before. So this was new. She asked about recent travel and said the clinic she is part of is moving to phone appointments when possible. They are phoning all patients who are over 65. I'm glad I talked to her, and we are organized now for the next little while.

That happened to me with my Cancer Care gig last week An 800 number. They called to make sure I got the email about the driving program being suspended. They left a message. I figure if it is important enough they will leave one.

Really unfortunate. But it is just one of many examples. People are doing it everywhere, just on a smaller scale. And that is why the virus is spreading.

Bringing up anything about mega churches would lead to non-desirable feedback so I'll only ;-)a

Implementing lean manufacturing at work we used a tool called the Pareto chart. The Pareto principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. It was very effective and I apply that to most things in life. Based on that I would say 20% of the population won't be following social distancing until they are forced to.

Yeah, the 80/20 rule works for people too. If you manage a group of people then there is always 20% of that take 80% of your effort to deal with. Also works the other way with the people you report up to! Harsh but fair.

That's a good thing. I have not had a single spam call in weeks :)

But then I looked at this article and shook my head in disbelief!

I didn't know that about the mega church, but I'd heard some of the smaller parish churches are doing similar in Louisiana.

We got rid our of our landline 8 months ago for that reason. We don't get many on our cells.

True, most of the robo/spam calls are on the landline with a modest amount on my cell.

I still hang onto the landline though for a few reasons: 1. Being an AT&T retiree I get a hekuva' discount after my 40 years there, 2. I never have to worry about charging it, and 3. It still has the highest audio quality of most of the calls I receive.

Also, 20% of your staff perform 80% of the work as well.

Haha! So right about that - when I supervised people 20% of the folks seemed to generate 80% of my HR related issues:rolleyes:

We were paying $40 a month so my wife could talk to her family who live in Ontario. We just added $5 per cell for unlimited LD. The drawbacks are that I had to install a direct to cell tower transmitter for the monitored security system to work. $180. My monitoring went up $10 so there is a payback period. If you call 911 your house number comes up automatically. I had to think about that. I hope we don't pay for the one day.

Yes the phones have better audio quality but at this point but we don't miss the landline.

Surprisingly, I am getting a bit more "spam" email. I rarely get any but lately some has been getting through. Also, I am getting emails from businesses and forums I hadn't even looked at for several years.

I've also been very aware of how quiet it is. I live on the edge of a city with an AF Base and an airport, so there are always jets and airliners overhead along with the constant low roar of traffic. Even my little residential street has cars going back and forth all day. In the last week, I think I heard one helicopter. I can barely hear any traffic noise, and very few cars on my street. It reminds me of the days following 9/11

I missed something. If you call 911 using a landline your house number comes up automatically. Not with a cell.
