I missed something. If you call 911 using a landline your house number comes up automatically. Not with a cell.

Well, don't know about iPhones but mine has this

I came up with an idea but don't I have what I needed. I was going to make a youtube video. Sitting on a stool would explain that I invented a device to prevent me from touching my face. As I was presenting I would forget and touch my face. A boxing glove with expandable scissors comes from the side, hits me in the head and knocks me off the stool. I have too much Monty Python in me.

True, most of the robo/spam calls are on the landline with a modest amount on my cell.

I still hang onto the landline though for a few reasons: 1. Being an AT&T retiree I get a hekuva' discount after my 40 years there, 2. I never have to worry about charging it, and 3. It still has the highest audio quality of most of the calls I receive.

And, 4) if you have an old fashioned analog land line (not the modern VOIP service offered via phone company's digital service) when power is lost to an entire area, your phone STILL WORKS!

Here in NorCal, when PG&E shut off power to prevent fires from arcing equipment, PG&E’s blackouts also cut off thousands of Californians from cell phone service, leaving them unable to get emergency alerts or call 911. A report prepared by the Federal Communications Commission reveals that at least 874 of the state’s cell sites were out on Monday, up from 630 on Sunday, when fires broke out all around the Bay Area. In Marin County, more than half — 57.1 percent – of sites weren’t working.

Having an analog landline was not a guarantee of service, in this deliberate system wide shutdown across very large areas. In addition, more than 454,722 subscribers with landline phones, cable television or Internet also lost service due to power shutoffs, according to the FCC report.

My old POTS line phone went out all the time, the audio quality was crappy and it was a long distance everywhere, it required dialing 11 digits to call my neighbor. It was a bargain at only $50 for the base rate, I use Ooma now and if it goes down I have my cellphone for backup, Ooma is less than $5 a month.

Back when I lived in Illinois we had a old fashioned POTS line and it too went out constantly. Every storm, ice storm, strong wind, we had a high probability that we would loose service. Wires are fragile and when one breaks, your screwed until the team finds it and fixes it.

It is difficult. As long as you washed your hands thoroughly after being out you should be fine. Also carry hand sanitizer for when I'm out which apparently is not as good as soap but still works.

Nice thing about wearing a mask is that it limits contact between hand and face, and acts as a reminder not to touch your face.

My guess is that masks are in short supply now.
