Bought a Lexar 64GB compact flash card on Ebay. It arrived today. This is the first time I've ever had a problem with an Ebay item. It appeared to be properly sealed, but here's what was in the box!

The seller responded immediately- "Sorry for the mistake. The package is sealed when I ship the item. Your payment will be refunded by paypal. You can keep the item."

Mistake!!!!!??? Sounds like- no big deal, happens every day. He has a 100% feedback rating- or had ;)

Stick to established vendors like B&H for memory cards, which are a common target for counterfeiters.

I've always got mine from Amazon. So far, so good.

Just as a point of interest, what was the eBay price from your particular seller? I see that B&H has the card at about $65 and the Sandisk Extreme equivalent is $70 at Best Buy.

I've always got mine from Amazon. So far, so good.

Even with Amazon, you need to be careful, and as you say "So far, so good."

Even Amazon will tell you that “Fulfilled by Amazon” simply means that the product is being shipped from an Amazon warehouse to you after being sold by a third-party seller. Here's an interesting scenario; Amazon warehouse "W" stocks a Lexar 64GB card that is provided by 20 different sellers. All these sellers sell the exact same product as far as labeling. Do you think Amazon has 20 different bins in the warehouse? I've been told "no", that the cards from all 20 vendors go into one bin. You order a card from vendor X, the robot picks a card from the bin; you order from vendor Y, a robot picks a card from the same bin. But what if vendor X supplied genuine cards and vendor Y fake cards. No one knows until the buyer gets a card and either detects a fault or actually tests the card for capacity and speed.

In theory, to be more confident of your purchase, make sure your purchase is labeled “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com,” which means Amazon is directly selling a product without a third-party seller involved. Can you trust this statement from Amazon. Personally I'm not sure. By the way, if you print the Amazon page that clearly states "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com" and take it to Best Buy, they will price match. Staples will as well, depending on the product. They will not price match a product labeled as "Fulfilled by Amazon."

“Ships from and sold by Amazon.com,”... exactly what I do.

I bought this card from Amazon two times without any problems, but it does not really "say" who is shipping this card.

I thought it was shipped by Amazon but now I am wondering.

I just found where it says "Shipped and sold by Amazon".....

I buy my cards from B&H Photo only. Keep an eye out, they have good discounts now and then.

Did you try inserting the 'card' into the camera slot?
Please post a video of you doing so.

You got me there John- Ebay $40. Of course because I didn't want to pay $62 at B&H.

Maybe have to bite the bullet.

<Choderboy> Didn't think of that- could have been a hilarious clip!

FWIW, I've purchased plenty of SD and SDHC and SDXC cards from
eBay and other venues with no failures or shortages of capacity.
I have not purchased CF cards from those same venues, however,
as they were not in my immediate need.

I've yet to recieve a completely different item than I asked for, however! :p

The nice thing about B&H is, should you have any problems with an order they will solve it without a runaround.

About three years ago I bought a set of ND spark plugs on eBay. Took me about a year before I was ready to install them. By that time I discovered they were counterfeit. I contacted both eBay an PayPal, but both would not help. They said I waited too ling. The seller was identified as welljob. I sent him a couple of emails, but never heard from him again.

Be Careful.

Just recently, my subscription for one year of the WSJ, stopped after nine months. I contacted the WSJ and was told the seller didn't make his last payment. Both eBay and PayPal do not allow disputes after 180 days (six months). And right now, both are not accepting calls due to Covid-19.
