I got an e-mail from CPS yesterday which said that Canon is shutting down their service facilities in Hawaii, California, Illinois and New Jersey until further notice. All service will be done through the Newport News, Virginia facility.

"Important notice regarding closure of California, New Jersey, Illinois and Hawaii Service Facilities:

Due to direction from state and local authorities in CA, NJ, IL & HI our Canon service facilities in those states are temporarily closed until further notice. All equipment repairs will be redirected to our Factory Service Center in Newport News, VA. Please note walk in service is not available at this facility.

We apologize for any inconvenience or delays that may occur during this time. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated as we continued to monitor the ongoing situation and follow the guidance of federal and state authorities. The health and well-being of our customers, business partners and employees remains our top priority during this difficult time. As conditions change, we will continue to strive to deliver the excellent service that you have come to expect from Canon USA, Inc.

If you have any questions regarding your benefits or repairs, please contact the CPS Member Hotline."

I hadn't seen a thread on this, so I thought I'd go ahead and post this....

They're not redirecting to Virginia, are they?

That'd be a logistical nightmare...

No. The email said don't send anything to us as there won't be anyone there to accept it. Also there is no one at the service centre to re-direct it if they wanted to but they would never do that anyway. It would be a logistical nightmare.

I posted a link earlier with some more details and they supposedly are keeping the Virginia facility open, and walk-in service won’t be available. See https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=19034005

Any updates with this? I understand the issues with COVID, but I'm low-key annoyed that Canon service centers reroute their phone traffic to the central Virginia office. I believe our local service center is ship-only, but in normal times, they never picked up the phone and the best way to communicate was just to walk in person...kind of old school. I understand they could have issues with being inundated with phone calls, but it always seemed like a round about way of communicating.

So if I paraphrase the above...

  1. Don't send Canon Canada any stuff...nobody will be home
  2. so we cannot/ will not forward stuff anywhere else
  3. it is a logistical nightmare to send it to Canon USA
  4. and so your camera will go nowhere...not even back to you.

Wow Canon Canada service is indeed remarkable. For heatlth safety reaons, all equipment goes into indefinite length Quarantime...I guess that really is more appropriately called 'Infinitine'...Quarantine is only 40 days by historical definition :p

I mean, that post was from March. I’m asking around for how things are going in August going onto September. I have way too many cameras that need sensor cleanings, repairs, general check ups, etc. I’m understanding, but also low-key annoyed since the whole upsell of Canon is the repair services and white-glove treatment, which is kind of stupid if it’s all dependent on in-person interaction.

They closed their office in Sorrento Valley in San Diego. Letters are gone off the building. They weren't a service center for cameras, that is Irvine in Orange County

Have you tried to initiate repair services there post-COVID? Maybe I’m just not sure where to look. Kind of a bit wary because of the whole ransomware thing, but sooner or later I’ll have to get cameras fixed.

That location does not do service repairs. Canon Learning Center in Costa Mesa does repairs.

That location is probably just an office for other subsidiaries as mentioned by Wilt. These locations are leased and shared with other companies.
