I guess I have too much time on my hands with the "stay at home" order so am sitting here starting to agonize over gear.

I recently got a used 7D2 and like the flexibility of the AF system over the 90D. I set the BFF to either 5 or 9 point and the * button to 65 point for when the bird is high in the air with no distractions around it. That alone is worth the new used camera, but also I feel it locks on better than the 90D.

My FF camera is the 6D mkII I got it because I wanted a FF and it has the flippy screen which for me with my physical limitations, can't kneel or get down on the ground, if I want to do some macro stuff below eye level when seated I need the flippy screen, so I will be keeping that . BUT the 7D2 shows me the limitations of the AF system on the 6D2. I like many have been thinking about the R5 or the long rumored 5D5 but with the virus and schedule disruptions I am starting to reconsider the 5D4 sort of a bird in the hand thing.

The question is new or used. With my tax refund I could do new or an excellent used version. I lean towards new as while I have been lucky in the past with used gear I always wonder about clicks, issues etc.

First off, to address your question, I would go with a used 5dmkIV. Your absolutely right I am seeing a lot of low shutter count used models at decent prices. So if you do end up wanting the R5 you won’t take as much of a hit.

Second, have you considered pairing up a EOS R with your 7DmkII? I have this combination and I am absolutely loving it! Just a thought. I will be trying to figure out the move to the R5 when it’s available but for now I am loving all the benefits of the mirror less system. Just an idea.

My kit : Canon EOS R6 and EOS R, RF 24-105mm f/4 IS L, EF‑S 16-35mm F4 L, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, EF 70–200mm f/2.8L IS III, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM, Sigma 35mm Art f/1.4, Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II, 600exII-RT, 580EX II. Gitzo GT2542 and RRS BH-55, Peak Designs Carbon Fiber Tripod, Think Tank MindShift BackLight 36L and 26L, and Think Tank Retrospective V20 2.0.

I would buy used right now. People are so convinced that they need to go mirrorless

they are giving them away right now

I have been watching craigs list in the Boston/Cape Cod/Rhode Island area and nothing on the 5D4 in the last 3 weeks. Still watching

but used does make sense as it doesn't drop in value as much when sold if the R5 comes out and I like it.

I want to be able to sometimes do severe crops, the 30 mp will help with that I also often like to take the battery grip off and go lighter.

Thanks to Mike for the link to the 5D4 I am now the proud owner of a 5D4!

I was considering buying a new 5D4 a few weeks ago, because my MKIII is starting to look a bit knackered (though it's working fine). I am happy with grey imports and, at that time, prices from a cheap but reliable supplier were around AUD2900. In the past week or so however, the prices have all increased by AUD200-400. The relevant exchange rate is pretty much unchanged, so I am at a loss to understand a price hike at this time?

5D3, 7D2, EF 16-35 f/2.8L, EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF 70-200 f/2.8L II, EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF 1.4x III, Sigma 150mm macro, Lumix LX100 plus a cupboard full of bags, tripods, flashes & stuff.

maybe people think the R5 will be pushed off and are doing what I am doing getting a used 5D4

You might be right regarding the R5, but if the price hike is demand-driven, sales of used 5D4s aren't relevant. Sellers must be anticipating/seeing higher demand for new copies.

Increases in the price of new copies usually pulls up the values of good used units however, so you might have timed your purchase beautifully!
