I am one of the privileged people who can work from home during this testing times. Lot's of video calls and meetings. The standard webcams just frustrated me as quality is abysmal and I am too cheap to invest into a high end dedicated webcam. So, why not use my old 60D? I evaluated a few ways to use it as a webcam and here's what I found. Not comprehensive in any way - but maybe a good entry point for others.
It seems that there are two easy options:
- Hardware: Use a HDMI to USB converter and according to the web this provides you with a normal USB camera. I did not try this, but here's a good youtube instruction: https://youtu.be/FITeErmXc8M
- Software: Without a comprehensive evaluation, I settled on SparkoCam (https://sparkosoft.com/sparkocam
). It was very simple to set up. I connected the USB of my 60D to the computer, installed and started the software. With SparkoCam you have full control over the camera's live view. In zoom and Skype, I now can choose SparkoCam Webcam as an input device. Very nice is also that I can focus on my face automatically (not standard in my 60D).
I am not affiliated with any of the brandnames above - just passing my experience. Let us know, if you found a specific solution and let us know your experience.
