I would like a bit of input and educated opinions about whether to carry my T3/1100D with Sigma 50-500mm hanging on the shoulder-sling by the tripod mount on the camera versus the tripod mount on the lens.

I intend to carry both, a 7DMkII with Sigma 18-250mm, and the T3 with the Sigma 50-500mm.

The majority of my pictures will be taken with the 18-250mm, else I would put the 50-500 on the 7DMkII instead.

I am sort of thinking that it would be best to attach the sling to the lens, rather than to the camera body, and thus take most of the strain away from the camera/lens union.

What are you guys thoughts on this ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

I use an Optech sling strap, it has two clips,I have one attached to the camera and one attached to the lens foot using arca swiss plates with loops on, this provides ample security and also stops the camera and lens from swinging about too much while I walk.

Thanks; sooner or later, maybe it would have dawned on me, but I hadn't thought of using two trigger-snaps as you describe.
I do have a second safety strap/snap that I connect to one of the Op/Tech connector-thingies that I have threaded through the standard camera sling loops, like this:

I can see where two main attachment points would be a lot more stable and prevent some of the swinging around.

I don't use the sexy little screw-in eyelets; I keep those big angled wheel-screw thingies permanently attached to the tripod hole on the bottom of the camera and an extra tripod adapter stays screwed into that.

I am glad I asked the question and very glad that you answered; otherwise, it might have taken me a couple years to stumble upon the idea of two connections.
