I use something called "Magic Lantern", but ML is not for everyone. You have to be comfortable with fiddling with technology and a good amount of trust in something that another person has created that is being installed in your camera. I have had ML get sideways on my once and the camera locked up. But pulling the battery was all it took to fix it.

Anyway ML can show you the shutter count. ML is available for the 60D but not yet for the 80D.

The other option is a Windows program that connects to your camera over the USB cord. I've never tried that program ("EOSCOUNT" I think?) because I don't have a Windows computer.

From what I recall, press MENU and then DISP. The shutter count will appear at the bottom of the screen.

As far as an 80D, you might give https://shuttercounter.com/ (external link) a try. You upload a photo and get the shutter count back. Also, supposedly https://www.direstudio.com/shuttercount/ (external link) will work, but only compatible with a Mac or iPad and $5 or $6 depending.

If using ML, bring up the ML menus (trashcan button), go to the "debug" menu (with the 0's and 1's, towards the right). You'll have to scroll down because the list of options is longer than what can fit on the screen.

DSLR controller is fairly cheap, acts as a remote camera control but also shows the shutter count in the camera info section. Check to see if your model is supported

Nice info, Chris. And this covers both the OP's 60D and 80D. As an app, $8 is a little bit heavy. As a photo accessory, $8 is reasonably cheap. It's all relative!

The question is if DSLR Controller supports the 80D for shutter count. I have an 80D and as I recall tried DSLR Controller back in early 2017 and it didn't work. I also no longer have an Android device. By the way, DSLR Controller hasn't been updated since August 2017; it may not work on later versions of Android. There is a "beta" version for a "jailbroken" iPad but it hasn't been updated since March 2014 which predates the 80D by about 3 years. Thus I doubt it works on an 80D.

Personally, too many questions about DSLR Controller.

https://shuttercheck.app/ (external link) will work but you need a Mac and $5.

I realize DSLR controller is not cheap or free: it's a tether tool, and yes, slightly outdated - which is why I suggested checking to see whether the OP's model is supported. It works flawlessly for me.

Not all of us need the latest and greatest: I don't need the newest camera as my older models are working perfectly well with lots of life in them yet - which makes that app quite appropriate and very useful for me with my tethered shooting (I'm a commercial product photographer).

I leave it up to the OP as to whether he finds the app useful enough to pay the price for it. Many single-function shutter count programs are free but rife with malware - some paid programs are also expensive for a single-use app. It's up to the OP to decide how urgent his need is.

Your suggestion for a MAC app is useless to those of us who use and like Windows. (I've used Apple computers in many of my commercial photography contracts and quite frankly, I hate them, But YMMV). And I wouldn't pay $5 for a single-function program.

First of all we don't know if the OP is using Windows, MAC, Linux or whatever. We further do not know if the OP owns a tablet of any type, and DSLR Controller is only compatible with an Android device. So everything is speculative until such time as we hear from the OP. But the bigger question, and as I stated is

The question is if DSLR Controller supports the 80D for shutter count. I have an 80D and as I recall tried DSLR Controller back in early 2017 and it didn't work.

If you check the website for DSLR Controller, both the 60D and 80D are listed as compatible, but IMO that may only be compatibly with tethering, not shutter count. When I tried it in early 2017, one version prior to the current version, it did not work with my 80D.

As to the statement "I realize DSLR controller is not cheap or free"; I don't think someone who owns both a 60D and an 80D should be too concerned about $8. But that is just my thought. If you have a need to know the shutter count, part with the money!

As to your statement "Your suggestion for a MAC app is useless to those of us who use and like Windows"; 100% true, but your suggestion to use DSLR Controller may be just as useless since it only works with Android. So I'll repeat that the shuttercheck app may work, but as I said "you need a Mac and $5."

As to your statement "And I wouldn't pay $5 for a single-function program"; at what price level would you be good with a single-function program? Have you ever written any code whatsoever? Do you know what is involved in testing against a list of products, etc. especially when Canon seems to have gone out of their way to inhibit the retrieval of the shutter count on the 80D? Do you perhaps buy, rent or borrow an 80D or just wing it? And new models come along several times a year.

Well, actually yes, I'm a graphic designer and programmer. I code all the time. I'm also a product photographer. I'm also a product designer. And yes, I test my products.

I made a suggestion to the OP. No I don't own an 80D, nor did I see the need to check every detail for the OP. That's for him to do.
