Made me happy to discover a good old fashion photo journalism piece in a newspaper (NY-Times): https://www.nytimes.com …e/new-york-hospitals.html (external link)
I know that there are many very talented photo journalists out there - but seeing their work in large news outlets (and hopefully getting adequately paid) is a wonderful thing.

The Washington Post has published multiple photojournalism pieces every week for years.

It never been, it just migrated to another types of media. Not just in American news papers anymore.

...there are plenty of media - but anything that actually makes money? I see a strong push of photoG on Youtube - but that's just not the same. Not trying to be snarky here - just wondering.

I have seen reports with photos in electronic media. Not newspapers sites, but like radio stations with not rudimentary web sites. Radio Freedom, Echo of Moscow, for example.
Also, where are many with cameras and phones sharing photos from live events. Works for me.

More from the Post:

I can see the gallery that sells my photos in one of the images; kind of depressing.

Photojournalism is not dead but a lot of us have gone from stills to video.

New York Times has a section devoted to visual story-telling:

Washington Post has something similar. From today's edition:

Both are regular parts of them.

NY Times launched another new photojournalism section:

The World Through a Lens
With travel restrictions in place worldwide, we’re turning to photojournalists who can help transport you, virtually, to some of our planet’s most beautiful and intriguing places.
