As the title alludes, I have zero experience with Photoshop. Its downloaded onto my 'puter and I have no clue where to go from here.

Is there a textbook one can purchase and follow during use? Or, is there a link somewhere to free Adobe Photoshop training that I am not seeing?

Thanks all.

This may sound more snarky than I intend, but why did you download it? What do you want to do with the program?

- Photoshop is the most widely used software packages in biological microscopy because of the ability to overlay layers (to show the same specimen under different lighting conditions or wavelengths and for the math functions which allow different features to be seen in an image.

- Photoshop is used to create art wit, or without, a photograph

- Photoshop is used to alter photographs and/or make them visually more appealing.

It is can do so many things that it is helpful to know what you want to do.

If you had to ask this question my advice is:

1. See if you can get your money back. The current subscription price, if that is what you bought, is $21/month.

2. Download the current version of Digital Photo Professional software (and the manual) from Canon for free. When you find it to be limiting, then move to a 3rd party product.

Hi Capn Jack
I downloaded Photoshop as it was a part of the package with LR Classic. I've never used Photoshop, but have heard it can do a lot, but again, I've not used it. So, since it came with the package deal I downloaded and installed in and am now wondering what resources someone may know of that would educate me on this.

Thanks.

2. Already have DPP.

Learn about layers and their masks. They are the beating heart of Photoshop. Everything stems from there.

This probably would have been nice information to have along with the initial problem statement.

I've been using Photoshop for more than 20years. And I'm still no expert. Although I do consider myself an Advance user.

For the uninitiated, it can be daunting. I would suggest two YouTubers who I follow:

I understand your needs better, now.

- With both PhotoShop and Lightrooom, opening them from the icon (rather than opening an image with the program) will show a screen with tutorials (image attached). These are god for getting started.

- Your local public library may grant you a free subscription to Lynda.com, which has a lot of information

- If you need to do something outside of Lightroom, just do an on-line search, there's a lot of information out there.

John- that's why I asked. At work, I get a lot of questions from users, dealers, and sales people who ask vague questions. Depending on the situation, I might ask such a question as I did in this thread. It is a more polite way to cause them to think about what they asked.

And you get a personal website with Portfolio. Several days ago the starter plan at Zenfolio as $10 a month. Less if you pay for the year. I see they dropped it to $7 but that will only be for the first year. Last time I checked Portfolio via Smugmug was $180 a year.

If you are into wildlife for $15 well worth it. You also get a bunch of actions. I'm affiliated with the author or the site. He covers LR and you only see about use about 1% of what PS can do but he has a few good techniques. Plug-ins are faster but this can be fun.

You use Photoshop to do all the things that you can't do in Lightroom.

The easiest way to learn Photoshop is to select an image and then decide what you want to do to it, such as a a border, move an object within the image, remove an object. There are a multitude of tutorials on Youtube to show you how to do these, some better then others.

I have found the Scott Kelby books very easy to follow.
