Photos of big Red Deer bucks in the rut are the kind of "little bit of red" images that I could really get excited about!
. There are deer rutting, but nowhere near where I live in Auckland - the deer populations are generally in the bush way down south. Hunting has been blocked while we are in level 4 restrictions (the highest level), but all being well, we will go to level 3 on Tuesday (I'll explain why not Monday in another post) which offers some relaxation. People can then hunt for food, but only on private land with the landowner's permission. Hunting on conservation land(about 1/3 of our land mass) is prohibited for anyone right now. This sanction is to prevent too much social contact, and in particular first responders having to sort out people who have had accidents. So far with people not obeying the lockdown we have had two quad accidents and one wounded that required teams of support and helicopters to go get them. They are being treated of course, but will be charged with a variety of offenses.
On one of our most popular beaches (normally) someone decided to walk on the cliff of a small island just off the beach. He fell and had to be rescued by helicopter. In the process of doing so he knocked a paramedic off the cliff in a panic as he was winched to the top. The paramedic ended up at the bottom of the cliff with a broken leg. Another round of charges for breaking the curfew...
