the newest Canon cameras use CFexpress, type B. Stills shooters don't need the 256gb and larger cards. There are very few 64gb cards available and I don't see any 32gb or 16gb. One of the nice features of the 1DX III is "Save Settings to Card"....kinda hard to use a $125-$150 64gb card to save the file to. On previous cameras with that feature I could use a 10 yr old CF card that was maybe 256k or 1gb, etc. Is there much hope in the foreseeable future for better availability of 32 or 64gb cards, cards under $125? Maybe others don't have a crystal ball either...

CFExpress is a card format that is physically the same size as XQD, and pin for pin compatible with XQD. Any chance the Mk III Canon is compatible with XQD, which was significantly smaller in capacity? Some early Nikons that used XQD later became compatible with CFExpress with a firmware upgrade.

Also, in the 1DXIII you ask about, 10 camera settings files can be saved on a card to handle in theory 10 differing situations. I would suspect that these 10 files would take a minimal amount of space on the same card used for image storage.

John, I'm not sure about XQD, I suspect it has to be CFexpress type B only--but not certain.

If I Save Camera Settings to the same card I use to record images--I normally Format in-camera after downloading images and that would delete everything. Are you suggesting that in order to save the Settings I just delete the images files and not format the card? right or wrong I've always done a Format Card after images are downloaded and backed up. It's almost muscle memory to Format Card....
thx.

I agree with what you do as far as formatting but two thoughts come to mind; one bing Canon has thought of this exact scenario and promts when doing a format “Do you want to delete settings files”? The other would be a test you can do. With a card reader set up a two separate partitions on the card. See how the camera handles the situation when formatting; maybe a prompt “format partition 1 or format partition 2.” Unfortunately I don’t have a camera with the capability so can’t do any testing.

For what its worth, the Ken Rockwell of the Mk III says XQD cards won’t work.

What do you want to do with the saved settings?

When saving settings to card a configuration file will be written.
So just save that file to a PC.
Or Phone for portable use.

I would find it handy but wouldn’t part with the $$$ as I’m not a professional. But you can save 10 setting files so I could envision a setting for backlit portrait, front lit portrait, football game at night, football game sunlight, landscape sunset, etc.

aha--I will give this a try, hadn't thought of this!

I will Save Settings To Card, then copy the settings file to my computer for longterm keeping. Then if/when I need to "Save Settings To Camera (like after the body comes back from Canon after a clean & check etc) I can copy the file from the computer back to CFexpress card (the $150 cfexpress card!) and all is good. I will try this today to confirm it works. (for anybody new to this part of the thread this is all because I'm too cheap to want to use a $150/64 gb on the shelf to use once per year to re-install settings

Meanwhile, maybe CFexpress cards of 32gb, 16gb, etc, will come available in the near future. Not everybody does video...

In retrospect it seems silly that I didn't realize I could do this. But in case it helps anyone who might read this thread in the future--know you don't have to devote an otherwise unused card to Save Camera Settings. The settings file is just a file and can be saved to whatever storage media desired, does not have to be saved on the card.

The test I conducted: I did a "Save Settings To Card" and then copied that .csd file to a new folder I created on my desktop, "Save Settings To Camera."

Then I formatted the card, completely removing everything. Then I made 2 changes to the camera's settings. Then I copied the Camera Settings file from the computer back onto the card and did a Save Settings To Camera. The original settings were successfully restored. Shoutout to Choderboy for pointing out the obvious--or should have been obvious!

What is the approximate size of the file?
