Remove Stain from Old Photo

This is not something I normally get involved with; however, a client wants to have this old image corrected. I have scanned it; however, I am not sure how to remove the stain in photoshop effectively.

That is really a tough one. My best suggestion is to convert it to a black & white image.

I can't go into due to time right now, but it would help to do a frequency separation. That process separates the image into two parts (layers) with one being the colors and the other the texture. The texture looks fine except for the line that would exist between where the stained and unstained colors would be.

The places where there is on single color would be simple to fix. Background, black suit, white shirt. Just mask them off and convert just them to black and white. Then put the real work into the skin colors.

I am working on creating this.... out of curiosity how many Hue / Saturation Layers did you end up using? I have quite a few and starting to wonder if I am going overboard.

I did two. Then with just the little bit of stain that was left over (like on the nose) I used the content-aware tool.

Well... that definitely beats my 6.
