One thing I have been trying to work on in the last year is how to introduce motion into photography. It used to be a fine art, but seems to have largely disappeared with "sharpness" being the focus of photography. I have no issue with sharpness, it does show off a certain level of skill. But it is also rather narrow in the representation of stuff. We do get things like panning in motorsport, long exposures producing silky water effects. But in general photography, probably not the best way to describe it, but there seems to be a hyper focus on sharpness. Sharness doesn't tell a story, convey movement...in what ever form. You can even still have extremely sharp images that convert motion - I'm thinking specifically of some of the really good rodeo shots I've seen.

So to you all so I can expand my understanding of motion, would love to see some of your better examples of photos that convey motion in what ever way possible. I need inspiration, and would to see what you have done.

That's really an open question-

It seems there is some sharpness to identify the object, and some blur to show the motion, such as in panning

I've seen some shots where the photographer lets the moving object leave a blurred trail, with the front of the object being sharp.

Not a great photo, but it does illustrate that sometimes you can infer motion because a subject couldn't possibly hold that pose.

I think the issue with sharpness comes from the fact that photography can be both creative and technical.... but is often one or the other. Many of the gearheads at my camera club focus on the technical. How sharp can I get this image, how narrow the DoF, how perfect the focus. Motion blur is imprecise and as such not something they like. Also few of them are actually looking to convey a story.... they just want a technically excellent photograph.

I am the opposite. I don't care about the technical, don't have any idea what sensor or other chips are in my camera, have never micro-adjusted a lens and have never wet cleaned a sensor. I am far more interested in trying to capture how people live, generally in relation to their urban environments or technology. Movement often plays a part in that for me.

How about motion with the camera itself?

Yes, for my racing photos, I've always tried to convey the motion - the action and the speed - which of course is central to motorsport and most sports.

And yes. I agree that sometimes, sharpness should not always be the "main thing", though it's become a bit of an obsession among many of us.

Thanks for the examples peeps. Love them. Particularly the non-sport focused shots. Like the sports ones a lot too... but were are surrounded by motion in a lot of things. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the non-sport focused shots. As a sports shooter myself... really like seeing stuff that doesn't fit the "normal" in the other genres. Great help all. Of course love to see many many more.

Wonderful photo. A lot could be said about what this conveys.

Like they were listening to me... ironically on the Facebook "street photography" sub group, they have had some fantastic images of "motion" over the last couple of days. If I can find a way to link to those images, Ill post some links. We come out of stay-at-home today at 5 pm eastern, and I am hoping to be able to go around and capture some images of the town coming back to life... and have motion be a key element to it. We'll see if Im up to the task.

I want to do more of it but I'm not that great at panning as I'm a little shaky. I recently to Topaz Sharpen AI and used Stabilize to fine tune details. I prefer not it use it and will continue to work at it but it helped with some of these. It wanted to correct the background as well which made it look weird but I used the mask to Stabilize the rider which was fast and easy.

Stabilze
