I was trying out my EOS R with Canon 500 f4 MKII the other day and changing some settings etc. in the menu. The EOS R will not focus on BBF or shutter when option in menu to "stop focus search is off . It will only focus when "continuous focus search is on" despite this option being stated in the info that it is not suitable for super telephoto lenses.
Is this a known issue ?

Thanks

That is the way mine has been set since last Sept and I use a 400 DO II. Stop Focus Search just prevents it from focusing on something else and then taking forever to go back to your desired focus point. The manual says if a lens is grossly out of focus it may take more time to achieve focus next time, which I find is true, especially with the 2X on it.

This might be a good one to add to the green my menu section for quick access if you want to stop focusing but I think the stop focus buttons may be a better option. I don't use them. I find using the Focus Preset and Playback Ring works well for this which I'm pretty sure you have it. While the manual says the Power Focus Mode is good for movies I think you can set it up for two focus points which I have not tried yet. I just use the Playback Ring and it snaps in so at least I'm close and AF is fast.

I should elaborate. "I think you can set it up for two focus points for non-movie mode". I don't see why you couldn't. While we are on this subject I found the 400 DO II far more sensitive to using the correct Distance Range selections as compared to my 100-400 II, again especially with TC's.

Sorry for bumping. Purple AF menus, Tab 1, Continuous AF. Make sure that is disabled.

You probably read on another site that someone tried Stop Focus Search and if focus is within a few feet of the last time you focused it will AF. I’ve never tried it but I will later on.

If so then it would be OK for shooting static objects but not sure if in would be any good for moving targets. I still don’t think I’d use it as there are other approaches.

Hard to find more info on this from reviewers, etc on searches and YouTube. Where did you read that it is not suitable for telephoto lenses?

ON: Continue focus search

If focus cannot be achieved with autofocus, the lens is driven to search for the correct focus.

OFF: Stop focus search

If autofocus starts and the focus is far off or if focus cannot be achieved, the lens drive stops. This prevents the lens from becoming grossly out of focus due to focus searching.

Super telephoto lenses can become grossly out of focus during continuous focus search, taking more time to achieve focus the next time. Therefore, setting [Stop focus search] is recommended for super telephoto lenses.

I tried it on Stop Focus Search. If it is badly OOF it won't AF. If you focus it manually so is it looks in focus through the VF it will AF. This would be handy for static shooting but I can't see it being useful for removing targets. I'm going to add that to my green menus for shooting static objects. I may switch back and forth between it and the Playback Ring and see what I like better.

Even the Fro says he leaves it on Continue Focus Search. Minute 25

I shot in Stop Focus Search pretty much all day on Saturday. If it was within a decent range it would focus in. It sure prevented a lot of unnecessary travel. Yesterday I se to back to Continue.
