Thanks for that Scott. I have been looking at youtube and i'm getting quite drawn to this now. It's a shame that the Viewpoint plug-in, isn't included in the Elite package too as that can be quite a critical piece of the programme when using wide angle lenses in tighter spaces and needing to straighten everything up. But knowing me, i'll end up getting it at some point.

Even though Viewpoint is a separate purchase, it hasn't been that much of an added cost for me, as DxO hasn't upgraded that utility since I originally bought it (so no upgrade costs). The same version of View Point has worked through my upgrades of PhotoLab version 1 to 2 and 3. If there were any changes to View Point, they happened in the background with the PhotoLab upgrades.

DAM is an acronym for Digital Asset Management -- basically, the ability to organize your photos into collections, use keywords, etc. I have used a folder system for organizing my photos even before I started using Lightroom, so I never really used the DAM features of the application.

DxO will quite often have sales on their software -- I think they had one that just ended. I would highly recommend the Elite version, as the Clear View feature alone is worth the price over the basic version. And yes, Viewpoint is a separate item to purchase. I do own that, as well.

Just for more info LR/ACR DeHaze is the same thing a ClearView.

From another perspective. The subscription is hard to beat if you want/need a personal website. it comes with Portfolio. A personal website is anywhere from $10 to $30 a month. Portfolio via SmugMug is $180 a year. It's almost like you are getting the software for free.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that Dehaze was added to Lightroom after it went to a subscription model. I do not recall that feature being part of LR6, which is what the original poster of this thread owns.

That is actually correct. Thanks for clarifying. I'm always in the zone of comparing the latest version of LR to competitors as it makes it more balanced. You can get a 3rd party plug-in for LR.

>> "You can get a 3rd party plug-in for LR."

To expand that a bit: At the time that LR 6 was released there was also a parallel subscription version, LR 2015 CC, released. On the sub version the interface had a slider that applied the Dehaze treatment, but LR 6 lacked it. However, the two versions were actually identical except for the UI. All the coding for Dehaze is there in LR 6 but almost nobody knows it. Somebody wrote a plug-in that accesses and applies Dehaze and made it available for free. He then held his breath waiting to see if Adobe would take any action against him, but Adobe apparently decided to just ignore it.

Affluence not needed. See here: https://cutthruthefog.wordpress.com/lightroom-6-dehaze/ (external link)

BUT...... the good news is that Adobe have come up trumps and given me a link to download my original Lightroom 6 and also dug deep and found my serial number too, to activate it. That's certainly restored my faith a little in the big boys apparently having a monopoly and always looking to shaft everyone. Well done them!

That said, I also have a stand-alone Affinity programme and they point blank refused to do the same thing - small time bandits :p

To be fair, all I ever use from the Affinity program is the 'removal' tool, for getting rid of unwanted objects in images. If anyone knows of a free/cheap eraser type tool that is really good, please let me know

However, a new license to Affinity is currently half price at only $24.95 for the next few weeks.

Actually, it is my understanding that Viewpoint is not really an added plugin in PhotoLab. It is already integrated into it. The Viewpoint palette becomes visible when you own a license. And of course you also get the separate standalone version when you purchase a license.

In addition to the similarity between Dehaze and Clearview Plus, Clearview is also similar in some respects to the clarity slider in Lightroom. And, the Texture slider added to Lightroom about a year ago is very similar to the Micro Contrast slider which has been in PhotoLab Elite for years.

Yes the texture slider was a welcome addition. Love competition because it forces companies to improve. I think is is also similar to C1’s Structure slider. For high ISO DXO is hard to beat. I hope Adobe does something about that one day. There was a request on the Photoshop user request forums and their primary computer scientist responded. I’m not going to hold my breath.

For $25 I purchased it. I haven’t even opened it. Maybe once after getting just to take a look at it.
