My stay at home mom wife has been itching to do something productive, and get back to some sort of work that doesn't involve children. One of her hobbies is making 3D canvas art, or just maing incredible designs on a board, or the ground and photographing them out of things found in nature. She has been getting tons of favorable feedback on pictures shes posted on social media, and some that she has had canvas prints made out of for gifts.

I am going to be teaching her to use my camera gear, and then process her pics. But the prints are my biggest concern. The few that have been ordered online didnt come out the way we expected. A bit whitewashed / slightly blown out compared to the actual photos. Do those of you that sell canvas prints do your own, or use a print shop? I'm looking for recommendations either way. I dont mind dropping some money on a printer so I we can control the quality if needed. Just looking for some professional input as I have never paid much attention to canvas before.

Thanks!

Step back from a canvas print and take a look at it... they get better with distance. When I first started ordering them I was shocked at how crappy they looked when held in the hand but when you put them on the wall and view from the correct distance they look just fine.

I've ordered from multiple online outlets, including AdoramaPix, Costco and Easy Canvas Prints and honestly don't see much difference between them BUT... and this is one BIG but... the deeply discounted outlets use crappy backing boards and when they stretch the canvas and staple on the back it sometimes BENDS the boards. This is something to be aware of with rectangular (especially panoramic) shots. These vendors use inexpensive materials and if they cheap out on the backing boards you can bet that the actual canvas material is not that great either. I've had good customer service having prints remade because of this issue, but when a client wants something on a certain date and it comes in defective it's a pain in the rear to have to reorder and possible take yet another trip out to rehang. Think of your time.

As far as printing at home I have no history with that. Not sure my Canon PRO-10 even does it... but now I'm curious. I'll have to look into this.

Thanks for your input! I was looking at printers this morning, and I actually still have that link opened in a different tab. I was shocked to see a $200 printer listed as their #2, and figured that couldnt be right.

Sam's club does a decent job and they are constantly running discounts making the prints rather reasonable
