I wonder if anyone knows if in the cropping menu it is possible to keep the "free" ratio setting as the default instead of it always defaulting to 3 : 2 ratio .I always use the free setting to crop and having to reset it from the default 3:2 is a pain.
Thank you for any advice ,oh the version is the latest one released Digital Photo Professional 4.12.20 for Windows
File version : 4.12.20.3 Release date : 19 March 2020 DOWNLOAD
:) Thank you

I have version 4.11.0.2 and it does the same thing. Aspect ratio always goes back to 3:2
I have experimented but found no way to lock it into free. I checked the instruction manual for DPP, but
no mention about locking the aspect ratio.

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.

The frame to be cropped must be taken into the Edit image mode.
Click the crop icon and set the ration to free.

I'm on 4.12.0.4 and I just opened it and the default was free, although I have never used this function, so I cannot comment on its behaviour under real-world use.:-)

Cheers

Dennis

I just checked for Updates under Help and downloaded the latest which appears to be 4.12.20.3 for my Win 10 Pro PC and again it opened with Free as the default.

Cheers

I am running the latest (4.12) and it seems to default to the ratio of the image. 3:2 for a landscape and 2:3 for a portrait. I would LOVE for it to default to "Free."

I'm also running 4.16.0.0 on a Win 10 PC and when the Tool Pallets Panel initially displays and I select the Crop Tab, it momentarily displays "Free" then quickly changes to "3:2" so the "Free" does not appear to stick?

Cheers

Dennis

Turns out I wasn't using the latest. Updated to 4.16... and no change. Still defaults to 2:3 or 3:2 depending on the photo orientation.

I wonder if there's a setting that indirectly controls this. Something like assuming certain picture data from the camera, which leads to it assuming that you want to maintain the same proportions in a crop.

I looked in settings but couldn't see anything relating to the default ratio.

I consulted the User Manual for DPP and could not find anything either, but I found a statement which might shed some insight into behavior...
"Images are shown cropped if they include aspect ratio information and were captured on compatible cameras other than the EOS 5D Mark II."

Perhaps folks seeing 'Free' have cameras in which the JPG embedded EXIF does not capture Aspect Ratio (?)

My 7D2 manual (and messing with the camera) indicates that it's not possible to omit the aspect ratio information. I can set different aspects for JPEG and raw is always 3:2.

However, it's almost as easy to copy the Free crop box and then paste it into each one you want to crop. If you want to crop most of the images in a session, you can add a Free crop box to an image, and then copy the recipe for that image to all images. Then they will all have a free crop box ready to go.

Not clear what difference being taken on a 5Dii is supposed to mean. Just compared Editing Tools cropping / aspect ratio options in DPP (4.15.20.0) for a .cr2 image from my 5Dii and a .cr3 from my 90D and all options/ actions seem to be the same, including the default of 3:2.

... and, from the good old days, Canon F-1n, FTb, Mamiya 645 (m1000s), etc. -- Rob

OK, I just found the magic sauce. Select all, go to the crop tab and select "Free" as the aspect ratio. Go back to each individual image and "Free" will be the default.
