I once had a 70D (and I've still got a 40D) but I need to find out if the 77D can do the following precise thing:

In Live View Mode, with the 77D in Manual (M) and with a manual lens attached (no electronics, such as LAOWA lenses, particularly the Venus 60mm) - does the LV screen show the subject - i.e. what the lens sees, or is it black (i.e. nothing can be seen)?

Reason being - the 750D, 760D, 200D, 250D - all the beginners cameras, you CANNOT use LV when using Manual lenses in Manual mode to compose via the Live View screen.

I suspect all the double digit cameras would show the subject...

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

Whaaaa? I had NO idea that was a thing. Sounds... rude. I feel like for canon to disable the flippy screen with full manual macro lenses, when it’s likely to be quite useful, is just frustrating.

It is frustrating. I bought a 760d and that how I found out!

Hmm... I'm not experiencing that.

I was curious so I grabbed a T3i (600D) and attached a Laowa Venus 15mm lens. Everything works fine, including live view. Same with my 60D: everything works fine. I checked all 4 exposure modes: P, Av, Tv and M. I also checked the flippy-screen, which (as I expected) made no difference.

I wonder then if it's the 60mm which acts up?

I put the lens onto a 1000D, the 760d, and an 800D. In all 3 instances using the live view screen, the screen went black when accessing Manual. It worked in AV and TV, but not M....

After trying all those 3, it went back into the 40D, and in M (as well as TV and AV) the screen worked perfectly. Then back into the 760D and a black screen again in M...

I'm happy to try some more experiments.

I was hoping that using a Laowa lens on a 3-digit body would be a close approximation. (And why do I always have to look up how to spell "Laowa"?)

Another variable could be the age. The T3i is older than the others that you mentioned, and I've seen Canon swing the cripple hammer in some unexpected places. For example, I have two Canon-branded battery chargers that look identical. The older one charges my Canon or Wasabi batteries. The newer one won't charge the Wasabis.

My newer bodies complain more loudly about non-Canon batteries whereas the older bodies keep on working.

Newer bodies might complain, where the T3i doesn't....

I've tried several more combinations with no lens, extension tubes, extenders, Canon and non-Canon, etc., and I've not been able to duplicate any problems. Things have worked for me in all combinations.

But I've collected a few questions along the way...

You included "M" mode in your description above. Does live view work in the other modes (like "P")?
When going into live view, do you hear the "click" of the shutter opening and the mirror swinging out of the way?
Do you have the "release shutter with no lens" option enabled (Red Setup menus)?
Can you still take a picture even though you can't see the image on the rear screen?
Do you see any supporting information on the rear screen (like shutter, aperture, frame number, etc.)?
What are your shutter, aperture and ISO settings?

The 760d has gone back and been refunded...

Live view worked in P, Av & Tv with the Venus manual lens - but as soon as the dial goes to M, black screen. I don't think I took a photo when it was black - didn't think of it.

In those modes, the photos were nearly always exposed wrong, but were closer to expected with Auto ISO.

In manual, I nearly always set ISO 100 or 200, 1/125, and set the lens to either f/8 or f/11.

I appreciate all your testing - it seems to have generated some interesting results.

However, a friend has the 70D and a Venus lens, so I asked him to test it:
