The Princes Tunnel. Joining Brooklands Lakes to Dartford Central Park. (Dartford. Kent. UK.)
Originally the Tunnel was built at the time of the construction of the first bypass road for Dartford to carry the River Darent under the new road.
The river at that time was fairly deep and fast flowing and the two bores of the tunnel were necessary - only the most daring would attempt to walk through, particularly the East bore because it had many ruts and holes beneath the surface.

The bypass road was reportedly built mainly to provide employment for the unemployed of that time in history.
The road was opened on 19 November 1924 by Prince Edward (later Edward VIII - of abdication fame - or infamy). My mother has said that as a schoolgirl the whole school went to the opening of the road to wave flags as the Prince passed by.

The West bore tunnel is currently able to take the extra flow should the river come into flood.

Top view - Looking South from the Central Park end.
