The boats in the modern image look older than those in the 60 year old image!

Well; they have become older and vintage’ised over the past few years - or judging by appearance, some may have been abandoned or awaiting restoration.:-)

Well so does Ray :p:lol:

That was definitely out of order, Richard. Vot is your name? I have become vintage’ised and awaiting restoration.-?

Very nicely presented and interesting series Ray.

I wonder how many boats still work those waters.

I'd imagine that stirred some thoughts in seeing all those

Sorry Richard, I have just read this post.
The canal has not been in use for donkeys years now and only exits into the Thames.
The first paragraph of the link reveals all. A good light read - I am sure you will get distracted by the links.:-)

Richard, you may have missed the little link at the bottom of the main link - here it is:-

And; as you like our very own Charlie Dickens so much - I will try and get a few pics - especially for you when the weather gets a bit warmer here. :p

Thanks Ray. Yes missed that. Hopefully some respite in the wind.
One of those times when people's money making ventures, called development, can be argued as the best option when it's far from it and not in best interests of the community. Money influences in the wrong circles

We were in Leeds a few years ago - nice use of the river Aire. The little ferries Twee and Drie that run from the Railway Station down to the Armouries came from Amsterdam, Holland. I wouldn't have wanted to sail across the Channel in one, but smaller vessels do!

Re: the earlier discussion of flumes, etc, the photo below is one I took on a driveabout this weekend. The 1 km flume/penstock feeds a small hydroelectric generating station built in 1898 and still in use. It was was the first hydro plant in the province (in those days, still a separate country), built initially to supply the nearby city's (St. John's) streetcars. Before that, generation was steam-driven.

The original flume was wooden, and - until an avalanche in 1921 - followed a route part way up the mountain, connecting where the surge tank is today. More at: https://www.historicplaces.ca …g/place-lieu.aspx?id=4326 (external link)

Yes, not far from Cape Spear. Petty Harbour is a nice spot to visit in the summer - some good eateries around the harbour front, too.

Interesting
We have some old hydro works served by large diameter timber pipes recently renewed
The Lake Margaret Hydro-Electric Power Scheme was built between 1912 and 1914, and included a woodstave pipeline to connect the dam to the pressure penstock feeding the power station.
Materials supplied by International Tank & Pipe Co. of Portland, Oregon, USA
