The Rochdale Canal runs for 33 miles between Sowerby Bridge in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, all the way to Manchester. It runs through the Upper Calder Valley passing Luddendenfoot, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Walsden. These were taken in 2018 at Hebden Bridge

Great shot Pantry! Nice and sharp and captures the character of the area. :-) Pity all the mill chimneys disappeared in the 50s. -? I think Fred Dibner can be blamed for that, though! :-)

Thank you Ray, much appreciated :-) I probably didnt do justice to the second shot of the lock in over processing a slightly dark photo to start with.

Hi Pantry - I had previously posted Hebden Bridge in the link below - I had difficulty remembering where it was until I saw a similar image somewhere in one of your local papers. I trust I've got the location correct this time.

Question do you recognise the location? Taken 1963 with my Leica M3.

Hi Ray, The large building with the Chimney to the right of centreis the same Mill in my photo , but I am not local to the area as I am an Essex lad. I only travelled up there for the vehicle rally one weekend. good pics though!

Ray that would make a really interesting modern comparison. Probably need a drone though?
Now you do have some homework. Must be a pint out there for compensation. :-)

Thanks for your identification, Pantry. I thought you were local to the area. I have driven past your scene A few times when I was working. (Don’t comment):-)
In my pic the canal must go right through the centre. Eh Bah Goom! How about that for a coincidence.

Regards.

You’re right, Richard. As I so accurately recall taking the pictures I drove my Rover 60 up a steep narrow winding hill and parked by a row of houses overlooking the town - but so many years later I couldn’t remember the name of the town - although I might not have known it in the first place.:-)
I do seem to recall it was about Easter time and there had been an unseasonably sprinkle of snow because I had to grovel under the car with a spanner and adjust the brake cylinder because it was not adjusted correctly and started jamming on! Those were the days - now I don’t even know where the brake cylinder is - assuming my Jags got one - that is!
I’d probably have to plug my laptop into the USB port these days and download a new version of software for it.:-) Grrrr! I took my car into the garage to have a service last week and have the auto beam fixed. They said give them two hours - the auto beam required a new module and a fresh firmware download - I took it in at 0800 and they couldn’t get the download installed properly - they drove me home at 1400 and delivered my car the next day.:-(

Westminster Mill. Horton Kirby. Kent. UK. An age old mill and weir. The mill was demolished and replaced by housing. At least - the mill had some character.-?
The river seems to be getting very overgrown. That’s progress, I suppose?

Taken from same viewpoint.
Top Original picture 1974.
Bottom picture September 2020.
46 years apart.

to be honest Ray it looks like that has gone backwards?
Where's the water? Or is seasonal?

Yep! Correct, Richard. The mill had some character in my mother’s young years and later.
The river, Darent, is a trickle of what it was as I knew it into the 50-60s. Not, I think, global warming but gravel pits draining the water - but still developers build on it’s flood plane and wonder why their properties get occasionally flooded.
