Drone or Hover

I always thought these were Drone Flies, but maybe not?
I admit to being quite weak on ID whether its a bierd or insect.
Regardless I abs. love these little creatures.
I've learned that I sit and relax and limit my gross movement they'll eventually land nearby
almost as if they are curious about me.
