After a year of rumors, denials, and backtracking, it’s finally official: Olympus is exiting the camera business after an 84-year run as one of the world’s most recognizable brands in the industry.

In a notice published to its website today, Olympus announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding to sell its camera division to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), the same investment firm that acquired Sony’s VAIO PC business back in 2014.

Olympus and JIP are aiming to sign a legally binding deal by September 30th.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

So tragic. I owned the Olympus E-M5 ii and I loved it, but the sensor was just too small for my needs. Anything past ISO 800 was really noisy which didn't work from me. The technology in their cameras was fantastic but I couldn't get past the sensor size. I wish they would've joined the L-Mount Alliance with Panasonic because a full frame camera with these features would've killed. Either way, it's sad to see them go.

...it's sad to see them go.

Indeed, it is sad.

We can only hope their new handlers keep it going, which is what I have come to understand
they have done with the SONY VAIO line of computers or somesuch.
Or maybe it was Intel's Lenovo brand...?

I have my mother's OM-1 camera, which I used frequently, before, during and after
a highschool class. If that same camera could be made as an all-digital model,
I would gladly purchase it now.
