My usual way of importing files from a memory card doesn't work with CR3 files.

This is my process prior to using CR3 files.
Windows 7 Professional is the OS

I create and title a new folder in the pictures section on the computer hard drive.
Put the memory card into a card reader attached to the computer.
The AutoPlay screen appears and I would use the "Import pictures and videos using photo gallery" option.
I would then pick the newly created folder to import the pictures to.

I can't do that with the CR3 Files.
When I try try to import the pictures using the photo gallery option, a message appears saying there is nothing on the card.

If I use the Lightroom option from the AutoPlay screen, the images will import to Lightroom with no issue.
I don't care for this method as I like to have the pictures in folders on the computer hard drive and be able to access and view them without having to do it through Lightroom.

Is it possible to import CR3 files to a folder on a hard drive without having to use Lightroom, and be able to view the files once in the folder without having to use Lightroom, Photoshop or Bridge etc.?

Also, the new camera I bought..90D.. didn't come with a USB cable for transferring files directly from the camera to the computer or a Canon DPP software disc.
It's been a while since buying a new camera so I take it that these accessories are no longer being included with new cameras?

Canon has an app that accepts CR3. You should be able to download it for free. I had it for awhile, but my computer is too slow to actually use it, plus I wasn't smart enough to use it. But it's not a bad program, just wasn't right for me and my computer.

If you are referring to Canon DPP, I have installed that since I posted my question and it works for viewing and editing the CR3 files.

After looking into things a bit more about these CR3 files, my understanding now is that you need certain software such as Lightroom, Photoshop, etc to import and open these files.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, I can't import these files directly into DPP from the card reader.
The Canon DPP program does not come up as an option in the AutoPlay window when I put the card in the card reader
I have to import them first into Lightroom or Photoshop, and then create a separate folder for them in Lightroom and then access that folder using DPP.

Am I right in thinking that in order to import these CR3 files from a memory card to the computer, the user is being forced to buy 3rd part software or find some other software that does it for "free"?
There must be some way to import Canon files using Canon software.

Why not do what you are currently doing, create the target directory, then just copy them over (drag and drop). DPP is not really a DAM but a raw image converter and viewer, neither is Photoshop. Lightroom is though but not really a image editor.

Either use the Lightroom environment using it's DAM functions or create you own directories, copy the files, an do you image adjustments using DPP or image editing using Photoshop.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

If I take a CR3 photo I can upload load it from the card to Photo Gallery. Photo Gallery won't open it, but it will store it. This screenshot shows the photo as CR3 and as jpeg.

Don't know if this helps or not.

Have you loaded the Canon CR3 codec?

You can download them from the camera directly to your PC using the Canon EOS Utility

If that is the only method available to import and view this type of file as a thumbnail, that's what I'll have to do but it's a change from what I did with the older Raw files from my 40D and 6D.
I didn't have to go through Lightroom to import and view those files.
I could just import them directly from the card reader to a specific folder I created on the hard drive before importing them.
I was using my own DAM system.;-)a

I guess in a round about way, I will be doing the same thing with these CR3 files using Lightroom.
It's just that now, I will have folders full of CR3 files on the hard drive that I can't view the thumbnail unless I use Lightroom or DPP.
Not that big of a deal but just a different way of trying to accomplish the same thing

With the CR2 files, I would see a thumbnail in my pictures library and I could double click on that thumbnail and it would open it up.
This is what I see in my pictures library regarding CR3 files.

That's interesting as my Photo Gallery program doesn't recognize that there are any images on the card when I attempt to use it to import the files and up until now, that's what I've always used to import files.
This is how I normally import image files.
The AutoPlay window would pop up after the card was put in the reader and then I would pick the import pictures and video using Photo Gallery option.
Now when I use that option, I get this message.

From your screenshot, it looks like your OS isn't Windows 7 and maybe that's the difference?

I wasn't aware of a CR3 codec needing to be loaded.
Loaded where?

Yeah, I'm on Windows 10. Didn't catch that you are on 7.

Just copy the CR3 files using Windows Explorer AKA File Explorer. That is what I do. Like you, I make a folder for the photos where I want that folder to be, with the name I want. Then I find the files on the card (which is in the card reader), highlight them, then either drag them over or use Ctrl-C to copy them. I would not use the word "import" for this. They are exact copies of what is on the card.

I find AutoPlay annoying because it usually wants to do the wrong thing and gets in the way, so I have turned it off.

Windows hasn't caught up to CR3 files, so you can't view them (easily) in File Explorer. I have heard you can get a utility to view the icons, as JJ also mentioned, but I don't have experience with it. There is some info here (external link).

Once they are on the hard drive, of course you can view and manipulate them in LR. You can also view and edit CR3s with FastStone (external link), which is a very capable little editor. And it is free.

It's not a utility, it's just a codec. Windows does not have the codec built in yet.

Importing the files to the computer from the card reader or from the camera itself using a micro usb cable isn't an issue now as I now know the work arounds for doing it compared to how I use to do it.

It's the fact that there are no thumbnails for the files once the files are in the designated folder on the hard drive.
Seeing thumbnails is a personal preference for me as I would go to a folder, look at the files that were in it and then choose what I want to import into Lightroom.

That may be an archaic way of doing things but it is/was my method.

Using a micro usb cable, I can import the files to a designated folder on the hard drive without having to go through Lightroom first.
Speed wise using the micro cable, I didn't find it too bad.
Took 30-40 seconds approximately to import 31 files.
