Had a 100 2.8 at one time, long since gone but am considering getting the L (due to age and lack of steadiness). Not knowing much about filters and such what would anybody recommend for not only protection but for filtering light. Am open to any suggestions...

thanks

john

What do you mean by light filtering? UV and haze is relevant for film EOS. For digital clear, digital protector filter is the best, IMO.

W ay back me and a lot of others put a skylight filter or some such thing on all our lenses. Mainly for protection, but sometimes for haze, etc.

Now it’s no filter unless I need or want it for the effect I’m after.
For protection I loudly recommend the lens hood!

Use a good quality protector filter with a good quality multicoating if you need to (not the Canon ones). You are unlikely to bump into a stick or something but it is a bit more likely with a macro lens.

See the protective filter FAQ below, if some of the links have expired you may need to search. Also probably a bit out of date but http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk …sts/Flare/FilterData.htm/ (external link)

Good one are Hoya HMC upwards and B+W MRC, look for maximum transmission and minimum reflectance.
