Well, this sucks. I took my R5 with my EF100-400 for a walk early this morning at a local wetlands (we have some nice weather finally, dry and a bit cooler). Was shooting some shore birds with the silent shutter. All was well, then I picked up the camera and NOTHING. It went completely dead. Battery change didn't help. Got it home and tried a charged battery. Nothing.

Has to go to CPS for repair. The tech tried to get it restarted but it is DOA. Off to CPS today.

Ugh..

Sorry to hear Ed!!....If they tell you what caused the failure I would be very interested to know what it was .

BTW...I was out today and my problem wasnt with the body it was with my 400mm f2.8 MKII. Because the R5 makes the EF400's IS stay active permanently regardless of whether the shutter button is half pressed or not it means I can always hear the IS going even if camera is not being used but is still turned on. Ive been able to live with this IS adjustment/movement sound permanantly working while camera is on until today when the lens started to make weird sounds like tin being tapped in rapid succession ! Real metallic sound and it went for about 10 seconds until I turned the IS off. Wasnt exactly a nice sound to hear for the first time and on a lens like this . It actually worries the hell out of me what the R5's constant "always active" communication with the lens IS is doing to the lens IS internals . And god forbid if I have to get the damn IS fixed on this lens...I recon I would be staring at at least $2k+ USD for an IS repair as Ive seen the IS part cost and thats nearly 1.5- 2k on its own ! Anyway at least you dont have to worry about cost as your covered by warranty although no compensation or cover for inconvenience

Hope everything works out ok

Cheers

Does it do this even when Continuous Focus is turned off?

You know you can set "Still photo IS" to Always, or to Only for Shot, right? When set on Always, the IS works incessantly. Drove me crazy untill I found out the Only for Shot option. You can find it in the first menu, tab 7.

I've been using Transcend cards for years...no problem. May not be the fastest, but no problems with reliability. Definitely an underrated manufacturer.

Same here. Never failed on me, always pretty fast for the price. I searched for Transcend before buying a Prograde CFE 128GB Gold and it seemed like Transcend did not exist anymore.

I have a 32GB CF by Transcend that is at least 7-10 years old, and can be read from a USB3 reader at 110MB/s. I didn't even know that cards that old can be that fast. I never had a reader that did more than about 25MB/s when I was actively using the card in my 7D (mark one).

I finally had the chance for a longer test run on Friday. More than just the ducks in the nearby pond. Wow! Amazing. Went to a local Fed Wildlife refuge.

One shot I took was of a Bald Eagle sitting in a tree a fair distance, using a 100-400 II. Animal Eye AF caught it right away, and the worst when it moved its head, was it stayed on the head. In post I cropped it down to about a third of the original size, and it was still really sharp. You'd never know it was cropped that much. And its still as sharp or sharper than original size shots of a Baldie from my 7dmkII. I also like the exposure results. Usually either the white head is exposed correctly and the body dark, or head over exposed, body correct. This had both properly focused without doing anything in post.

I was also able to test it on lots different flying birds, and the AF hung on there the entire time. I am thoroughly impressed.

About 1500 shots, no lockup.

For those who use Eye AF.. Human and animal... do you leave it turned on all the time, or just when you need it.. I am a landscape shooter 95% of the time, but also do wildlife when it presents itself.. Do you just leave it on and if it senses an eye it engages? or do i have to enable it for each use

I've just left it on, but if my primary intent was landscape I'd probably turn it off. But its easy to swap back and forth as well.

good question

One of the reasons I choose R6 over R5 is cards

I have been told you need the better cards to get performance out of R5...and those card and another battery add $800 for camera entry fee

who knows for sure ???

MEMORY CARDS

If you're shooting stills you don't need to go crazy on super high speed CFexpress cards. I started using ProGrade Digital CFexpress cards this year (beginning with the EOS R5) and I'm just using the 128GB 1700 GOLD cards, not the COBALT cards. Some of the top people from Lexar and SanDisk started ProGrade Digital and it seems like a great company. I first heard about them through FStoppers but never made the jump because I was still shooting CF cards at the time (5D Mk4) and they don't make CF cards.

The 128GB 1700 GOLD cards (which are the lowest spec rating on the chart below) are obviously more than capable for stills and they're also great for video as long as you're not shooting 8k. I've even shot 4k HQ on these 128GB 1700 GOLD cards and it's no problem at all. If I ever wanted to get into shooting 8k I'd get the 650GB 1700 COBALT cards (look at the 'Minimum Sustained Write' spec below), but those cards are $700 and I really don't care about 8k.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

I have an affiliate link for ProGrade Digital which gives me a credit when someone purchases from their site. I'm not on here to be a commercial so I won't post the link, but if you're interested in buying from them (and helping me get a credit at no extra cost to you) let me know and I can send the link. Trying to rack up some credit to get more cards when business picks up again.

When I'm transferring CFexpress cards to my computer they're so fast compared to every other card I've used!

But you're right, the entry fee is a bit steep. Whenever I get a new body I know I'm going to have to feed it batteries and memory cards, so I always plan on buying new cards because each body has its own cards and batteries.

I shoot with battery grips so I bought eight new batteries for my two EOS R5 bodies so each body would have four batteries. The original batteries that came with each camera are also spares in my bag but I haven't had a day long enough to use them yet.
Each body has five CFexpress cards (the 128GB 1700 GOLD cards mentioned above) for a total of 10 CF express cards.

I did something different this time with the SD cards and I'm not sure I'm happy with it. I bought two 64GB SD cards for each 128GB CFexpress card, thinking there might be an advantage in multiple cards for file safety, etc. For weddings it turns out to be more of a hassle than it's worth (yeah, 20 SD cards to keep track of), so I'll eventually replace those 64GB SD cards with 128GB SD cards for shooting weddings.
The 64GB SD cards will still come in handy for certain events like fashion runway where we have a runner who takes the cards to the editor so images can be posted during the show (still working on the wireless setup). When shooting runway we usually send cards after each designer's walk is complete before the next designer is about to start. In that scenario I'd rather use smaller SD cards (even 32GB SD cards) and change out my 128GB CFexpress card after every two designers. Still working that through in my head because there haven't been any shows this year so I have plenty of time to plan for 2021 shows.

Thanks for posting this

I shoot redundantly as well. On my 1Dx2, I shoot 64GB Cfast and 64 and a CF and both are set to Raw....its strictly back up for me for dual cards...I have had 3 card failures ober the years and the back up cards always had the files. So I have been really lucky

The R5 is CF express in one slot and SD in the other....so I will need 2 CF express cards as I have Plenty of SD's. I used to frequently shoot back to back weddings. But at 64 yrs old...thats not gonna happen anymore. So I like the idea and a 128GB CF express and just leave in the slot. Maybe clear it once a month and just rotate the SD's for paid shoots

I decided on R6. Its the cheapest way for me to get in. Im talking to few guys at DWF that I have known for 12 yrs who have 1Dx2 & 1Dx3's...they have also got R5's....they prefer to 1Dx bodies for a number of reasons.....faster focus, faster to PU a moving subject, better in low light at receptions by a lot is what they are saying.....these guys are extremely competent photographers....R6 and animal eye focus and individual portrait needs using eye focus is something that I am excited about....probably late January/February for me. Waiting on stock and Canon adapters

I also need to upgrade speedlights. Im done with Godox V860's...too unreliable in ETTL...so Ive got to deal with that this year as well....so that puts the R5 really out of reach financially......especially with covid

My R5 has arrived.
Surprised me a day ahead of tracking this morning during breakfast.
Just adopted a new rescue dog yesterday and my daughter is back in town, so only just now had the chance to even opened the box and input date and time, ( 11/22/2020 @ 2:22pm... weird. )

Mounting the EF 85mm f/1.8 to keep it portable while I mess around with settings. I've only just scratched the surface of the EOS -R set up, so this is still quite daunting and different. Still a little EOS-R here and a little !DX3 there, should help me out a bit.

Exciting!

re: Transcend, they hit the scene at a time when I had to be very conservative with money, so i did not own any Lexar or Sandisk,. Ri_Data and Transcend were my go to. I have 1gb Transcend CF cards still, as an indicator of when I bought my first ones, and how long they have lasted without issue. Purely anecdotal, but they've soldiered on.

Is anyone using the R5 with a Samyang 14mm F2.8 Auto Focus UMC II ? And if so, any comments?

You know you can set "Still photo IS" to Always, or to Only for Shot, right? When set on Always, the IS works incessantly. Drove me crazy untill I found out the Only for Shot option. You can find it in the first menu, tab 7.

This setting is a little confusing to me. It appears "Still photo IS" is only available when a NON IS lens
is attached. When an IS lens is attached it seems "Still photo IS" is not available and the lens IS is either
ALWAYS ON or ALWAYS OFF controllable only by the lens IS switch.

The same thing occurs on my 5DIV when in live view , the IS is always on.
Maybe the IS needs to be always on for sensor based AF systems.

This got me wondering too.

I understand that the IS Mode options are lens-sensitive and change depending on what the lens can, or cannot communicate to, the R5. When you attach a lens which does not support lens communication data, then the IS Mode menu item should display.

I fitted a Canon IS lens (300mm F2.8 L Mk II) to my R5 and at the lens, moved the IS ON/OFF switch to OFF, but the R5 Menu 7 Tab did not offer me the IS Mode ON/OFF option.

So, even if you turn OFF the IS at the lens, it is still communicating with the R5 that it is an IS capable lens.

Cheers

Dennis
