Mine arrives tomorrow, although I'm stepping up from a 5DM4. I'm looking forward to the truly silent shutter for memorial and church events. Also the bigger sensor for my landscape images. It will be "back to school" though as a lot has changed by way of features and menus.

I found zone quite good on my 7D2 and 5D4. I had more body and heads I focus than wings. Burst shooting always had good hits I a sequence. However yes to get true consistency single point would be the best. I just liked to mix it up.

I never had any use for Zone. It's behavior was always less useful than selected start point with expansion for my uses.
This was what I had to say after pretty extensive experimentation with zone on the 7D2;

I agree it is good at finding a bird in the clear sky. But add in busy background , be it treeline of water, and it's gone.

I just discovered that the DPAF focus LOVES to work with the EF Life-Size Converter.

Any lens in your kit can be a macro!

What a timing... vmad
When I was desperately looking to buy 400mm DO II, there was no refurb stock.
Then I gave up and focused my attention to R5 and R6.
After much deliberation, just bought R5.
And today the 400 DO pops up. One of the two that were in stock is still available.
If I had not bought the R5, that stock would have been zero by now.. Oh well..

I had its moments. Here are a few of my early 7D2 tests and I did more with trees in the. If I needed guaranteed AF then I'd use single point. People kept saying that it would pick water or ground that was closer to the camera but I swear it was weighted to moving things because I didn't find that.

The second image. It focused on the bird and the bus was moving behind.

Mine landed yesterday.
Opened today for sanity check. Played with settings, formatted card etc.
Tomorrow will do some test shots, let's see..

I have changed my settings so many times that I forget which button I set to what. Or end up with 3 buttons set to one function.

I did the same, but then used C1-C3 to program base settings the same, except for the main focus...C1 main focus is spot with 4 surrounds, C2 main focus is large zone and C3 main focus is the smaller zone. The AF-On and * are set the same; AED and spot, respectively. All other settings are exactly the same for each custom function, so the only difference is the main focus priority on the shutter.

The problem solved!

Although very happy that I was able to get the pre-focus white square to show up and detect an eye immediately when I point the camera to the subject, the tiny white square would not turn into the corresponding tiny blue square when I try to lock in on the focus by pressing the AF-ON button. Instead, as soon as I press the AF-ON button, the tiny white square breaks out into multiple tiny cluster of squares.

I was about to resign to the reality that that was the limitation of this camera. This morning as I woke up, however, something in my head told me that I should revisit the original programming that made the pre-focus white box to appear successfully. The key part of that instruction (which I got from a member in fredmiranda site) was to set the Initial Servo AF pt for Eye detection and tracking to Auto and program the AF-ON button as follows: AF/Metering Start, hit INFO Detail Set, then choose AF mode to Zone.

It then occurred to me that the Zone setting could be a suspect, so I changed the AF mode from Zone to Eye detection and tracking. Then, boom, it worked! So, now, this is how it works:

Raise the camera to the subject, the pre-focus white box finds the eye of the subject immediately and automatically, I press the AF-ON button and the tiny white box transforms into the corresponding tiny blue box, indicating that the focus is now locked in, I then shoot away with all sharply focused images as results. Having set the Case 2 and 3 Tracking Sensitivity to -2 and Switching tracked subjects to 0 (two tracking sensitivity settings that, as far as I have found so far to limit the tracking from randomly changing from one subject to another in close proximity), it's now effectively allowing me to choose the subject of my choice and not to randomness. Interestingly, changing the AF mode from the earlier Zone to Eye detection and tracking "allowed" the settings in the Case 2 and 3 and Switching tracked subjects to be much more effective in noticeable way.

Well, folks, I believe I have finally nailed the optimal set up for bird and wildlife photography. :-D

And here's one (through a dirty kitchen window glass) image from this morning after a eureka moment:

I think a lot of folks are getting tripped up by the sub menus when setting up BB AF where they could have conflicting AF settings.

It wasn't so much conflicting AF settings; it's just that the Zone setting wasn't as effective in zeroing on the focus as the Eye detection and tracking.

I have not used the detail set so far. I did with my DSLR’s. My C1 to 3 setting all the AF modes, etc that I need for the R5.

Gee, setting up the AF on the R5 is a complex area, there are so many different choices that fundamentally change the way the camera operates.

I'd changed so many things that, at times, I could hardly remember what settings I'd used and how they inter-related. I settled on a setup and was pretty happy with it. However, one thing that has been driving me nuts is trying to get the little white box with the arrows on the side, I could never get it to pop up. I've had the pre-focus square pop up before but it didn't seem to offer any real benefit by itself.

Eventually, today, I sat down with my camera and got the pre-focus square to come up again, however, still no arrows to the side. I went through every setting and button mapping again, trying to figure out if there was an option or setting I'd missed but couldn't find anything. I decided there must be something in my button mapping that was restricting it...

At long long last, the Eureka moment...somehow my multi controller was turned off!!! I've no idea how that happened and I guess my time with the EOS R has led me to stop using it (I hated not having it on the R and I cannot believe that I didn't even realise it had been disabled)

Anyway, happy days :-) The plus side is that I'm much more aware of what this camera can do now and am looking forward to using my new setup.

Thanks to all those here who have gone into the depths of the AF settings, it's really helped out.

Okay, my R5 is here...so much for the Fed Ex signature requirements, checked the app and it said it was already delivered. Now I hafta go to work...I wonder if "my new camera just got here" is a viable reason to call in sick?
