Seems like Canadians are getting ready to pick up their cameras between today and Friday. The cameras arrived yesterday at retailers. Seems like only about 1/3rd of the orders were filled by Canon.

Desire to learn; a camera & a few other things.

Canon R5 vs Sony A7SIII overheating test

The Sony overheated faster than the Canon R5 at many resolutions

Interesting. I just watched Tony Northrup say how the Sony doesn’t overheat. He tried to make it overheat “but failed, letting it run for hours on end.”

I personally don’t like his videos and find he is inconsistent.

Dan Watson shoots Nikon IIRC so he wouldn’t have any bias towards either Sony or Canon so I find him very trustworthy in this test.

It’s also worth noting that the Sony was set to high when it comes to heat tolerance in this videos so under normal it would overheat faster than the R5.

I am stills only so either would be great.

I wouldn't trust Sony Northrup with anything. How can people at their level do a review for the R5 and not be able to expose properly. Paid by Youtube and the more drama they create the more cash roles in.

Sorry for the rant.

Oh, I’m with you! Northrup is a bit too slick for my taste.

EDIT: totally agree with both of you.

Although he didn’t do it I know Ted Forbes got offered 20k or something crazy like that to review a product. He forgot to stop recording during his podcast and was discussing it haha. I don’t think he did it though which is good but shows companies will pay a lot for people to review stuff.

Yeah I never subscribed to him. I’ve watched some of his videos but always stop after a short while lol.

I like his reviews. The funny thing about his real world reviews are most of the images look the same regardless of what he is reviewing which shows you can get great results with anything regardless of brand.

The Fro is OK IMO. He calls out all camera manufacturer good and bad points equally. I like his reviews.

Anyone preorder from B&H say anything other than "back ordered"?

My Control Ring lens adapters already showed up.

I got an email today that the battery grips are shipping out (should be here Friday).

Then I got the email that the EOS R5 shipped out and should arrive tomorrow (Thursday), which is perfect because I have a wedding (elopement) on Friday.

The only thing I'm not able to get yet are the new batteries. Those are still on backorder.

FYI - I placed my pre-orders the moment it was possible (at 5am as the announcement was going live). One with B&H and one with Adorama. I like Adorama (perhaps a little more than B&H) but their website isn't as polished. When you do the "Notify me when available" thing on Adorama you don't get notified, or when you do it's weeks later. B&H notified me and I still haven't received anything from Adorama. On the B&H website I could order accessories for the R5 (battery grips and the new batteries) but on Adorama's site I couldn't even locate these items.

I canceled my order with Adorama and pre-ordered the second body through Best Buy because I get 10% off (basically saves me the tax) plus another 6% back in Best Buy dollars that I can use toward a RØDE mic or wireless system.
I won't get it as quickly as B&H but it's more important for me to save $390 than to have the second body immediately.

Just reading the Canon EOS R5 Manual (CT2-D091-A) and on Page 91, it looks like the Canon tech writers are encouraging the reader to take up a 2nd language, Spanish/English...

Cheers

Dennis

EDIT - added the translation into English.:-)

I noticed that too. There was a site that had a bunch of manuals in different languages. It kept adding more but no English for about 3 days and then someone posted it when it come out. Since the manual is not available at Canon USA I'm not sure this is the true Canon manual. It is very helpful. We'll see what this page looks like when it's up at Canon's site.

DPP Version 4.12.60.0 is out. It will have support for R5 and 6. For those who use Adobe, etc their DNG converter was updated too.

Yeah, see, John, this line of reasoning is what I have a problem with. You are reasoning from a technical standpoint but IMO it has little relevance for real life usage. When I come home I look at the pics I took, SOOC, as is. And when I do I will zoom in to 100% (so that one pixel of the image equals one pixel of my monitor) and I want my subject to have that critical focus and sharpness and I want the files to be as clean as possible. All the rest is irrelevant. To me anyway. I now want a new gen sensor because it will give me cleaner files at higher ISO speeds. If I look at the files of the R6 the same way I look at the files of my 1DIV I hope to see a difference in noise at higher ISO’s. That is all that matters to me because this is how I view my files. Never up or downsampled.

You often say that it's just our perception that makes us think that sensor A is cleaner/sharper than sensor B but that this perception is wrong. But in our assessment of the photographs we take, what else but our eyes do we have?! "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" because everything is perception! What use is it to me to know that I'm not really seeing what I'm seeing when compared to camera XYZ? That's not how this works when I download my images from the memory card into my Mac. I just look at the images the way they are!

As to the advice of not looking at files at 100%, I ask how else am I going to assess if my subject is critically sharp and in focus? Viewing an image at 60% or 70% or whatever, makes no sense to me. Everything will be sharp when you look at a file downsized to that.

I don't know, but if you can't view an image at 100% because it won't be sharp as a consequence of the high pixel density, then in my mind something isn’t quite right. Maybe the pixel density is simply too high? And is this maybe the price bird and wildlife photographers have to pay for wanting maximum cropability so they don’t have to do the work? It’s just a guess. I do know that when it becomes a choice between more detail but not really sharp at 100% and somewhat less detail but sharp, clean files, I choose the latter.

Here are two pics to put things in perspective a bit. Oldies but the detail is still plenty for me. And they're tack sharp at 100% view. Just how I like my images.

A pic taken with the 5Dc and the 300/4L.

And this one was taken with the 1DIIN, a camera with all of 8MPs I believe. And cropped to the dimensions it now has.

Unless you are selling your photos to a pre-contracted client, who cares what anyone else thinks about your photos other than you? That's what is so great about this craft, especially digital. You can view your photos at 100% and John or whoever else can view his/her photos at what ever level they desire and the outcome is there for you. Each of you can be satisfied or disappointed with your results. In a non-precontracted sales environment, if a potential buyer does or doesn't buy your work then you adjust your technique accordingly, rinse and repeat. :-P In a pre-contracted situation such as weddings, portraiture, product and others you already know what the expectations are and I would think you have already established a process to achieve the desired results.

This is one of the reasons I shoot for myself. I'm the only one pleased or disappointed and I always know who to blame!
