For those who've extensively used 1.6x Crop mode:

Are there any autofocus advantages? For example, does the R5 track small birds in flight more effectively (because it's processing power is concentrated on fewer pixels)?

The only thing I've noticed in 1.6x crop mode is the AutoFocus area doesn't extend to the edges of the screen. I found that kind of odd, and expected the opposite.

Okay, just bought a used 300 2.8 IS version 1, and it seems the IS is always running unless I switch it off. It's kind of noisy, not a grinding sound, but since I'm not doing video with it that doesn't bother me.

I'm on firmware version 1.3.1

What does bother me is the battery life effect.

I loaned a version 2 from Canon and it did not make this noise. Should I return this lens? Just arrived today, or is this just a mirror less thing?

I cleaned all the contacts thinking perhaps that might be the issue. I also attached it to the 5dm4 and there was no noise until I actually focused on something.

Go to the red menu, tab 7. There you can set the IS to be active only at the moment of taking the shot instead of Always on.

IS running all the time is a mirrorless thing. Try it out on your old DSLR and see the difference.

The new floating IS tech in the RF lenses makes it continue to run until the sleep mode times out. For an RF lens the only way to shut IS off is the power down the camera or wait for it to time out. I believe this started with the M series.

Even though Canon advertised a seamless transition between a R bodies and EF lenses the two second time out after taking you finger/thumb off whichever button does not apply. However for an EF lens you can press the menu button I think and there may be another that will shut the IS off. This only apples to EF lenses, not RF.

In fact using an RF lens and you shut the IS off using the switch on the lens the IS still runs. It doesn't stabilize but it runs and is subject to the same timeout period. I have mechanics stethoscope and I could it running. I did these tests with my R and RF 24-105. I could even just put it on a table and hear the IS power down after the sleep mode time out. I did not test it with my R5 but I assume it does the same thing.

I'm not worried about battery drainage with RF lenses. This did get a lot or attention in all the forums when the RF lenses came but it the verdict was the new IS floating tech does not use a lot of juice. I would think the EF IS system will have more battery drain if you leave it running.

I didn't know about that. I only used my 100-400 II and on the R and I don't remember that it had that option. My R5 has never had an EF lens mounted to it.

Forgot to say. That menu does not even appear with an RF lens mounted to the R5, which is the way Canon programmed it.

I don't see a page 7 in the R manual or on the LCD unless there was a FW update that I forgot about and they snuck that in on another page. I can't check because I don't have an EF lens. It's been 16 months since I had any EF gear so I can't remember either. Yes very cool that Canon added that.

Here lies the issue according to this video, you wont find Is (Image Stabilization) mode when you go to red menu tab 7 when your lens has IS

I had the same issue with a 300mm f/2.8 IS USM (MK I) lens I had. It was noisy when you turned on the camera. I looked into it, found the IS mode menu, but then discovered it was only for non-IS lenses. I never found a good solution, other than keep switching the camera off frequently.

With EF lenses, IS shuts down when the camera is not presenting a view through the lens (either through the eyepiece or on the LCD).

Interesting.

Still a minimum of at least 15 seconds instead of 2 using a DSLR.

Question about shutter life; Mechanical vs Electronic vs EFCS. The R5 is rated at 500,000 actuations. Assuming that means mechanical actuations. Does using EFCS buy you more actuations in any way?
