Question about shutter life; Mechanical vs Electronic vs EFCS. The R5 is rated at 500,000 actuations. Assuming that means mechanical actuations. Does using EFCS buy you more actuations in any way?

I would think yes because it alternates between mechanical and electronic. Someone else pointed out that it's not that expensive to replace the shutter. At this point I'm not all that thrilled about E shutter. Some fake sound and some FPS control would help. So far I’ using EFCS.

Okay, just bought a used 300 2.8 IS version 1, and it seems the IS is always running unless I switch it off. It's kind of noisy, not a grinding sound, but since I'm not doing video with it that doesn't bother me.

I'm on firmware version 1.3.1

What does bother me is the battery life effect.

I loaned a version 2 from Canon and it did not make this noise. Should I return this lens? Just arrived today, or is this just a mirror less thing?

I cleaned all the contacts thinking perhaps that might be the issue. I also attached it to the 5dm4 and there was no noise until I actually focused on something.

Does that lens have mode 3 stabilization? That usually keeps the IS off, except during the shot. Otherwise, I don't know if there is any way not to have IS on during EVF live viewing, without turning it off completely.

Go to the red menu, tab 7. There you can set the IS to be active only at the moment of taking the shot instead of Always on.

What lens? You don't get that menu choice with every lens.

I don't know any stats, but logically, one curtain ("first" mechanical) doesn't have to move with EFCS, but the second one wears as fast as with all-mechanical, and is more likely to fail first due to more use, if you frequently use EFCS.

If there was a bias where the first curtain wears faster with the same use, then EFCS could delay any failure.

I doubt version 1 would have Mode 3.

No, version one only has 2 modes unfortunately. I did think about that.

You have access to this menu with a lens without IS, be it EF or RF.

Okay, tonight I was using the 300 f2.8 IS version one shooting ballet dancers. Electronic shutter was no problem speed-wise, however, the mechanical shutter was unusablely slow.

Is there a setting, or a mode I should be looking to use or is this just the problem of using a lens from 1999 on a modern mirrorless camera?

Settings: AF, IS mode 1, tried Mech 1st curtain and Mechanical shutter.

just downloaded the R5 firmware 1.5.0 from the canon site and the date on the file is 27/10/2021 so the camera says the current firmware is later - anyone else had this issue?

Do you have older firmware versions on the memory card that you put in the camera? I remember getting a similar message at the 1.4 firmware when I had older 1.3.x versions on the memory card. Now my memory card only has the latest firmware when I put it in the camera.

I shot BIF this week with firmware 1.5.0. I was down at St Marks Wildlife Reserve and the light was pretty poor most of the time with quite overcast skies. I had the ISO as high as 8000 as a result.

My impression is that 1.5.0 is a very significant improvement. In contrast to previous firmware, I found "Initial Focus Point AUTO" to perform very much better for me than other modes and switched to AUTO full time for the last day. It picked up even small, fast water birds (Forstner's Tern) quickly and locked on reliably. Very significant improvement IMO.

Slow, as.in maybe 3-5 fps, which is nowhere near what I get using an RF lens.
