Thought I would post some images up of accident I had with r5 and 400 f2.8 the other day as Im impressed with the r5 Body strength :)

Basically I had my 400mm f2.8mk2 attached to r5 via and adapter and attached to the lens was a large Gitzo monopod with tilt head and I was out taking some shots here in hot Darwin and feeling thirsty decided to lay gear down on ground in front of my dual cab amarok and went to rear to get a drink out of the fridge . As i was coming back up the drivers side of the Amarok I decided to move the car forward a few meters forgetting my camera gear was resting on ground directly in front of vehicle grill !!. I started vehicle and as I took off heard a sickening crunch and cracking like the breaking of a branch under the tire !!!. Almost immediately I felt sick knowingI had just run over my damn camera gear. I only went a couple of meters before stopping but it was enough to total everything. When I got out I saw the Gitzo end of monopod peaking out from under side of vehicle broken but still attached to pan head and inturn still attached to lens foot and lens but no r5 body attached. Looking further I found r5 in dirt back some meter with broken adapter lying in track. Not a good look let me tell you . Anyway packed it all up and decided to inspect properly at home which are pics below.

Looking at damage it appears car wheel must have hit the lens hood first as thats totally destroyed yet lens itself especially near lens front ring with rubber seal ( where hood attaches )has no flat spots so looks like it didnt get the car weight. The rear of the lens wasnt as lucky with the adapter snapping at its lens lock section leaving this jammed under the lens connection flange which inturn is very bent but i think highly fixable/replacable ..

Then we get to R5 damage. I was amazed. Even though it had suffered some heavy impact ( especially being attached to lens and bearing some of itsweight directly on ground) and dragging under car it still worked after replacing the broken adapter with a new one!!.. Rubber camera cover around jack and usb inputs was scrapped off and its down to bare metal via some pretyy sever scrapping it got but all is till fine !. I was amazed as I was certainly sure the r5 was toast initially on front where adapter fitsrather than the body. Iglued the rubber back got a new adapter ( which is now a tight fit onr5 :) and now using on 100-400 5.6II till I get a repair verdict from Canon cps on whether 400 2.8 is repairable. Assuming the rear bent flange mount connection can be replaced only leaves a question of any internal damage as every thing looks ok ( no broken glass only a rubber seam crack on front lens rim except for totalled lens hood) . The damn hood will be 900AUd and rear connection change will most likely be 300.00AUD with labor so already gone for 1200AUD without the internals being checked. That will be the big cost I suspect if either the IS or AF is shot. ANyway heres hoping :) :)

Cheers

PS Laugh is Im getting shots of mt 100-400 5.6 II that I recon are as good if not better than my $400 f2.8Mkii so going back to the 100-400 is no problem :)

I'm so sorry that you had such a horrendous experience. I've myself gone through a couple such accidents in my photography life time but nothing compared to yours. These things happen in an instant and always leave you with a gun-wrenching feeling. I hope the damages are limited to your assessment and that you can get them back from Canon like new. Your photos look great as usual, so the fact that your R5 is functioning normally is a positive thing. When I dropped my brand new R5 with the RF 800 onto the ground, I was fortunate to have sustained some scrapes that left permanent marks on the R5. That was nicely remedied with a custom skin, and that's an option for your R5.

Nice; thanks! Still baffles me a bit, though, as to what characteristic of the lens creates these limits/bottlenecks. Battery/power totally makes sense, but lens?

I haven’t watched the vids yet, but will

What is strange is that the R5 does AIServo AF in bursts stopped down, anyway, so it seems that nothing in the lens other than the AF motor would need to move during a burst. The speed of the aperture shouldn't be a bottleneck.

Does the R5 open the aperture between exposures for these slower-fps lenses?

WOW!

For what it's worth, my first foray into owning a Canon big white was a used bargain priced (seriously) EF 500mm f/4L IS gen 1. It was bargain priced because, yes, the Hood was cracked and the lens mount was totaled. In my case, I was able to source the new mount for only $25.00 US, and it took me about 15 minutes to swap it, and I lived with the cracked hood, it gave it character. It looks like you might need a few more parts at the mount end, perhaps the plastic is damaged as well? screws, and of course you might need to write off that hood.

Sorry to change the subject but this may be helpful to some. You'd think Canon could have found someone to update the the new manuals release date.
I looked at Canon USA several times and it said 2020 so I never bothered opening it.

However if you do you see this. Same goes for the R6.

Also they changed the names of an adjustment menu. The instructions are the same so it still does the same thing. Still a little wishy washy IMO. Now the R5, R6 and R3 are identical when to comes to this menu.

Ouch, sorry to hear your misfortunate accident With the high cost of gear these days, insurance is a viable option.

Hi Jake...Yep...I think the hoods totalled and a change out of the lens mount is required but hopefully thats it . BTW Canon CPS have been great. They are sending me a loaner r5 and 400mm f2.8mkIII over 3000kms from Sydney all the way up to Darwin where i am currently free of charge and overnight until we work out whats repairable and whats not etc Thats top customer service in my book

And whilst this is all happening you will probably see me back in the 100-400mm thread a bit more often!! :) Its actually refreshing for a change not to have to lug the weight around that goes with the primes.

Cheers

It makes my vehicle based destruction seem nothing, all I did was reverse over a Manfrotto 190 tripod. Replaced 1 leg.

Regards your hood, there are options.
The soft, travel hoods.
Also there are some people 3D printing hoods, mainly to cater for the need for shorter hoods.

Hey Choderboy...long time no speak/see here!Or maybe its we have just been in dfferent threads of late ...Hows things ?.......I have a travel hood but would be very interested in the 3d hard hoods ? Ive heard they were around but everytime I went looking I couldnt find one. Having said that a couple of years ago I saw a guy was making them out of metal which was laser cut but he disappeared off ebay. Would be interested in a link if you or other POTN members have one for the 3d hoods ?

Cheers

Hey Clipper, just different threads. Mainly shoot Sony now. I do great, just started new work driving buses for school excursions, camera usually comes to work now :). I'll have a look tonight for the hood maker, he's on Fred Miranda site. With the price of Canon hoods, shipping costs from US for alternative should be still economical.

From a color standpoint, is there something significantly different between this camera and the 5D3? The 5D4?

I've only had the R5 for a few days, just taking random snapshots while I get used to the controls, but as I'm looking through the images in LR (Camera Standard color profile), something seems noticeably different. I can't quite put my finger on it. Not sure if it's the color rendering, a result of having 45mp, or something else, but the images have a "smooth/creamy" feel to them.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure this isn't new gear placebo because I wasn't looking at the images for this purpose, it was something that kept catching my eye as being off from what I'm used to seeing.
