Sigma has a USB lens dock that connects to the EF mount of the lens. I actually don't recall ever updating any Canon lens firmware in the past; didn't know it was possible.

I was growing more and more frustrated. I haven't set up many custom settings on the R5, and considering the R5 is still under warranty, I decided to tinker. I restored the R5 to factory settings and installed old firmware. Didn't work.

Reinstalled lens firmware and tried again on the "factory" R5 settings. Didn't work.

Upgraded R5 firmware to 1.3.1. Didn't work.

Upgraded to 1.4 firmware. Didn't work.

Tried one last reinstallation of the lens firmware. Suddenly the lens is playing nicely with the R5. -??-??-??

Based on that sequence of events, I have to believe the lens firmware didn't install clean for whatever reason. I'm happy I don't have to get rid of this lens. I'm not sure how it compares with the RF 35 f/1.8, but I've always felt the 35Art was the best value of all the 35mm offerings. Crisis averted.

Cool! An issue with the lens FW update was one of the best-case scenarios for what you had described! Glad it was fixed with a reflashing (I'm knocking on wood so as not to jinx it).

I think the EF 600 F4 had one.

Finally had a day to take it out for a spin after its trip back to Canon and some hardware replaced. I didn't really have enough time behind it to tell whether the lockups have cleared, but the AF finally works as I had come to expect and didn't jump around like a frog on a hot tin plate; and the IS seems a LOT more stable and effective now.

How is this done? Does it have to be sent to Canon, or is the firmware loaded to a memory card and updated using the attached camera?

Yes you can just attach to your camera with the FW loaded onto the card. I've updated my RF 100-500 and RF 24-105 F4.

This is for version III. FW update 1.1.3. About a year ago I remember reaching there were some issues with. I imagine it should work on the R5. If not an EF body for sure but it is not a body update so it should on any body.

If you want to find out of your lens has FW go to Canon USA. Products - Lenses, Flashes, Binocs - EF and RF lenses. Find your lens then click on Get Product Support.

Thanks for that info. Looks like my 100-400II had new firmware released in 2020. Would have never known.

Not a bad idea to check once in a while. Most of the time people post when updates come out.

Anyone using Legacy C/Y lenses on the Canon R5, if so, which adapter are you using.. I just picked up an HAOGE adapter, but I dont get any focus point. I should mention I do have under orange tab #4 release shutter without lens turned on, which is necessary to use MF lenses .

Do I need to turn on or off any other settings, or is it an issue with adapter

I discovered you will not get a focus point using legacy MF glass on a R5 using an dumb adapter (one without any electronic contacts) On an R5 you first have to magnify, and then use the joystick to move to area without any focus point that you want to focus on. it's just to general, its rudimentary at best in its approach.

Where as on a Sony system, using the same kind of dumb adapter (one without any electronic contacts) you will get a focus point that you can move around to the area you wish to focus on to attain critical focus.

It has been mentioned that it might be a firmware problem since the R and RP also have a white square you can move around so you know where you’ll be zooming into.

Might be worth calling Canon to let them know, so it can be addressed in a FW update .

^^^^Or just use a "smart adapter." The Canon adapters both work fine with EF lenses on an "R" Canon and one of the adapters has a controller ring like the RF lenses.

No, you're doing it right. I have several C/Y Zeiss lenses that I use with my R5 and R6 via a "dumb" adapter (mine is by Urth). As others have said, you won't get a focus point, because there are no electrical connections in the adapter. I've been using adapters like these for years with micro four thirds cameras and a Sony a7R, and the best way I've found to focus is to use the magnifier. The R5 and R6 allow you to cycle through three levels of magnification using the magnifier button on the back of the camera. The viewfinders on the R5 and R6 make proper focus easy to judge. With no magnification, you won't see any white boxes or guides in the viewfinder. With the first press of the magnifier button, you will see "X6" in the lower right corner of the viewfinder along with a white rectangle. Inside the rectangle is a smaller, solid white rectangle. The larger rectangle represents the whole image while the small rectangle represents the area being magnified in relation to the full image. Another press of the magnifier button takes you to "X15" magnification and the small rectangle becomes smaller still to indicate a smaller area being magnified. You can use the joystick to move the magnified area around and you will see the small rectangle move accordingly within the larger white rectangle to indicate where you are within the frame. I apologize if this is as clear as mud, but I hope it helps.
