Just got an email from B and H, looking like my R5, grip and battery is now out to late October- early November :-(

I ordered my R5 Aug 9. The website then said Aug 26 to Sep 10. On Aug 26th, at 12:01 AM, apparently, it said "by Sep 10". Now it's Sep 9, and the page is telling me that it will be delivered tomorrow. What horrible web programming, unless a genuine miracle is in store for me.

2 questions:

1. The manual gives the conditions under which the frame rate is maximized - certain operating temperature, anti-flicker off, battery life at a certain level, so on and on.

How does battery play a role in frame rates? If there's power left in the battery, why the drop in frame rate? What's the mechanical/electrical theory behind the slow down in frame rate at 60%?

2. Is there no way to control the frame rate on the R5? Any Canon camera I have ever used allows you to adjust the High shutter rate down if preferred, so instead of 12 fps, I could set it to 10 fps. Not available the R5?

I think discussions came up over this before, and it looks like 12 and 20 are it, depending on settings, battery capacity left, lenses used, etc. Some lenses won't even allow 12fps in that mode, but no configurability by the user. I think it is an oversight, one should be able to control what the burst rate is at least, like 5, 7, or 12 and the electronic shutter mode should also be configurable, like 15 or 20 maybe.

Even the 7D2 had this option.

A friend of mine has one and said exactly this it can be somewhat unpredictable and therefore he did not really like it for fast action. He said he will use it as a second camera but not his main camera. He’s also using a 1DX3.

As to the battery, perhaps the battery level is important to keep the lens in focus while doing a burst, and as we know, larger batteries drive lenses faster. So perhaps Canon has put an emphasis on focus first with bursts, and thus lower battery levels might mean lowering the burst rate in order to give priority to focus.

Just a guess however.

I agree. That's a standard feature and has been for several years. Complete oversight.

That's what I'm leaning towards - that or selling the R5. I really like the files and handling of the camera as well as the video features, but dropping frame rates based on battery percentage means I'd have to keep a whole lot of batteries on the ready at a swim meet. I'll know in a couple weeks I guess.

Is anyone using, or tried, shooting with an EF-S lens on the R5? Ive seen EF lens here that are impressive, but wondering about EF-S IQ output. Although most of my shooting would occur with the 100-400 or 150-600, I could foresee times using the wider crop lenses, especially the 18-35 for astro, and the crop mode results would give a file relatively close to my 7D2. I’d have the headroom for cropping birds/raptors/aircraft on the long end with adapted EF glass, without sacrificing on the wide end vs my current lineup. At least that is my theory anyway. Over time, I could migrate slowly to RF on the wider end as needed.

I'm curious too. I was impressed with the 12ish MP results using EF-S on the EOS R in crop mode. Not for all applications but for anything web or low to mid video it is more than adequate.
With the initial 45MP of the R5, that equates to just over 17MP in that EF-S center crop. ie: very nearly the 7D2's 20MP, and much more pixel density than for example the 1D4's 16MP into a 1.3x crop.

there are plenty of posts discussing the unwieldiness of a 45MP RAW file,. etc. Use EF-S and you can get your sub 20MP files with all that R5 sensor DR and noise goodness.

I'm gonna start using that term more often. Such as,

Dumb question, but why instead of an EF-S lens, wouldn't you just shoot with an EF lens and then crop to 1.6? Wouldn't it be the same thing?

Of course I have a Sigma 18-300 that is plenty sharp on my 90D and 7D2, nothing quite like that (the 28-300 EF is big and expensive) I use it as a walk-about lens when I can get it back from my son.

I got the same on the R5 + lens deal. I did manage to get some batteries last week from Adorama, but they are sold out again. And still no word on the adapter ring. Looks like I will be using my 6D Mk II for a while yet.

My first real camera was a Canon F1. That was a long time ago.

EOS R5 bugs ..

I have an issue with my R5 (latest firmware)

Over the past two mornings the LCD screen has frozen when tracking a Squirrel 5 metres in front of me.

I was using my 300mm f2.8 MKII with basic adapter the first morning, servo tracking mode , focusing on subject no pictures taken ( I used BBF) and suddenly screen freezes with exactly the same view as before, looks like viewing an image on screen but with the blue focus points . This lasted about 6 seconds then camera makes a soft clunk like powering on and all is normal. Same this morning , happened twice in 3 hours but this time with RF 70-200mm lens .

Hope Canon are reading this, great camera, best they have ever made :-)

B&H still has the Vello adapter in stock:

I've been using it for the past couple of weeks and it has worked fine for me. My Canon adapter arrived yesterday. I have an R5 on order to go with my R6, so I'm keeping the Vello in case I need to put an EF lens on each body.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

I can't answer for the prior poster, but I can answer for me. I have some really nice EF-S glass that isn't worth a song on the resale market. I have them back through my 80d (which I still have) and still use them on my M6 Mk II. I've acquired several EF-S lenses since my T2i days and had almost every xxD to date except the 90d. Like I said, perfectly good glass, but I couldn't sell them all for enough to buy one nice RF lens. My EF-s 17-55 would be an L lens except they don't brand EF-S lenses as Ls. It's that good.

So I'll flip your question right back at ya. Why do I want to shoot FF and crop to APS-C when I can shoot natively APS-C on nice APS-C glass and it's ready to go?

Just a perspective.
