As far as the evf freezing during shots goes, one may have to get used to shooting with both eyes opened and track the subject with the eye that's not behind the view finder. It's awkward and takes some practice, but it can be done.

I can't, my left eye, I am left-eye dominate and always used my left eye in the VF, but it now has a bad cataract and horrible floaters so that I have trouble seeing out of it.

I switched to right eye in the VF and even if I keep the left eye open I really can't see anything with it

Tap the shutter right before bringing up to eye like Ron says. Down in comments.

I know what you mean about the delay in the EVF coming on. What I have learned to do is half-press the shutter button as I am bringing the camera up. By the time your eye gets to the viewfinder the EVF will be on and you can get on the birds just like you would with an OVF. It took me a couple of days to build the muscle memory to the the half-press on the way up and now I don't even think about it, I just do it naturally. That said I hope Canon can make this unnecessary in the future.

That's good to know and will be be 2nd nature for me since I already do that with the Dslr.

Floaters. Bah.

I've got a dime-sized floater in my dominant eye (right eye) right in the middle of the field. It's shaped like a cowboy's lasso.

I remember the moment it developed. I was walking through the door of a Walmart and was suddenly hit with a spell of dizziness...and there it was. It was so sudden and so large that I immediately ran to the optometrist there in the store. His theory is that nerves in my eyeball detected the event, but had no set way to "report" it to my brain. So my brain interpreted the sensation as "dizzy." "What the heck was that? Jeez. I dunno. Call it 'dizzy.'"

I thought I was the only one with floaters.

Yup mine is the size of California and also the gel is thickening so it is blurry most of the time, at least I was able to switch from my dominant left eye to the right on the VF.

my retina specialist said it is my being very myopic (worse than 20/400, if I take off my glasses I bump into things)

Now that I have been doing it with both eyes open for years, I can't do it with an eye closed. It is almost like BBF; muscle memory isn't there to use regular shutter button as effectively.

same

If you knew how many blinks I have seen while the shutter was closing. Dont have to look at back of camera much. I see it happen. Also helps with wildlife shooting

Blinks. Flashes that don't happen. All kinds of stuff.

One of the reasons I use a tripod whenever possible for portraits and love Live View is that I can take my face away from the camera and look directly at my subject (and them at me).

That works wonders for children as well. Photographers talk about children refusing to "stay put." I find that if they can see my face, they are more likely to engage with me and will stay put.

Yesterday I sold my last EF lens. No more EF gear. The end of an era. We'll see what the future brings.

Quick question - it is my understanding that this camera has the same learning database for sports imaging as the 1DxIII. I had a quick chance to try it this weekend and it failed miserably. That said, I didn't exactly have the right lens on there, but the tracking of a swimmer was abysmal.

I figure there's some specifics regarding how the AF system should be setup for it to function correctly, but I can't find anything more than the Canon description of what it does and a general overview of how it works. Anyone found something with the setting suggestions or base requirements (certain focusing mode, certain frame rate, so on)?

Woo hoo! Should see my R5 next week. Cpricewatch preorder on July 10th, was hoping for the second shipment but no joy. Looked 50/50 on the 3rd shipment but seems like they had some cancellations and I squeezed in.

Now the long wait for it to ship and make its way to me from Canada.

Picked up a couple of the new batteries last week from my local store so will have two fully charged and ready to go on delivery.

Went ahead and cancelled my BH preorder that I made in mid-august. Getting it sooner and cheaper too!
