Question:

Is the Prograde CFexpress Cobalt a good card for the R5? I read the specs and know it can handle all the R5 offers, but just want to know if the card is dependable vs. the Sony tough cards.

I was dead set on the Sony Tough card, but began thinking about the Cobalt specs with it having a minimum read speed of 1400 MB/s, which provides a lot of headroom for the higher video resolution.

Can anyone point me to a speed test of the Cobalt card?

Thanks...

Does anyone know what the difference is between Eye Detection and Eye Detection AF is? I get the part where it says Eye Detection AF can't be assigned in movie recording but it offers both options in AF-ON, Star button, etc. I have a button programmed for Eye Detect and it seemed to work. Not sure why a second similar option is there.

I haven't been out with the new toy yet but I did some programming yesterday and changed a few things up from my R. So far my only dislike is where they put the Rating button. The R just had the Menu button there and I keep pressing it. I have not seen that I can configure it.

I'm going to give this a try.

I normally shoot Auto ISO.

M-Fn = set to toggle between Fv and C1-3. Here are my main configurations for my most used AF modes. Single, Zone and Face and Tracking.

Movie button = toggle between Eye and Non Eye detect. Since I shoot mostly animals so I registered Human/Animal in the green menus. I may assign the Lock or Light button to that later.

Star button = toggle between Display and EVF. The EVF wakes up faster if you disable the EVF sensor and let the camera go directly to the EVF.

Multi-Controller moves AF point/s around pressing centres them. I also enabled the LCD to move them around which I prefer. Using it to centre the AF point/s is handy.

Quick control dial = EC

AF point selection button = Drive Mode. Drive modes are configured in the C1-3 but this gives me quick access.

Lens Control Ring = AF Modes. I'm not a big fan of the ring and AF modes are also configured in to the C1-3 modes so I don't often change them. I think this will be handy as well.

Top dial changes shutter speeds.

Back dial toggles between RV, AV Exposure and ISO

The RATE/MENU buttons drive me crazy, that's one of the things I'm planning to put in the very beginning of my review. I got buried in projects and am finally digging out so I hope to record my YouTube video this weekend on my experience with the EOS R5 after 2 months of real-world use. There is so much to say about the EOS R5 that I'll never get it all in one video so I'll do several shorter videos, otherwise the perfectionist (and procrastinator) in me will never get it done.

I've switched to using ProGrade Media exclusively starting this summer and I'm really happy with them. Basically the company was started by some of the top people from Lexar and SanDisk, both of which I previously used so I'm equally (if not more) confident in the quality and reliability of ProGrade compared to Lexar and SanDisk.

I don't have any of the Cobalt cards yet because I don't plan to shoot 8k video. Maybe I'll pick up a Cobalt card at some point and give 8k a try but it's not really my thing.

What I learned is Eye Detection just toggles between off and on. If you are in single point or zone AF, Eye Detection AF will switch to eye tracking if you press the assigned button.

I'll stick to Eye Detection. I had read that you can do a similar setup in custom controls using the AF-ON button - Detail Set. Apparently depending on your selection if you are using single point or zone AF and your subject leaves the AF points it will automatically switch to Face + Tracking. I have not tried that yet but I'll get around to it.

I did not have much of a shoot yesterday. Just testing things out. I had one heck of a time with the AF-ON. The R has it located to the far right. After a year of shooting with it my thumb kept pressing the * button which I programmed to toggle between the EVF and Display. I swapped the AF-ON and * assignments and I'll try that out. It feels more natural so far.

I really didn't like the positioning of that button in the R and never dreamt I'd get used to it. Seems like it's going to be a PITA again as I try to un-learn it! (assuming my R5 ever arrives...)

I didn’t like the R positioning either at first and on top of that found that nub sticking out irritating. Now my thumb goes to that spot. I don’t miss not having that nub.

I thought I had a handle on this but now I’m confused.

I thought you set up a button either AF-on or * to Eye Detection+ Tracking and that’s it. No? Then you set up the other button for AF single AF point with no eye detection or tracking for normal AF. What am I missing?

I just bought one from them (B & H)Friday at 11am. Shipped on Sunday. Did not have it pre-ordered. Saw it posted somewhere they had in stock. Rechecked and they show it in stock as of 2 minutes ago.

Just got the email it is shipping today....

Great! Is that the battery you originally ordered, or a new order?

People do that but I didn't set it up that way. Nothing wrong with what you are doing.

I prefer to only use one BBF button for Servo which is typically AF-ON. I programmed the REC button to toggle between Eye Detection and non Eye Detection. I programmed the M-Fn button to toggle between Fv and C1-3 for my main AF modes. So when I'm in C2 = Face + Tracking or C3 Face + Tracking/Initial AF Point I can quickly toggle back and forth between Eye Detection and Non Eye Detection using the REC button.

When I'm in Fv = single point and C1 = Zone AF both don't offer Eye Detection so using the REC button doesn't do anything. However you can set it up so when you are in single point, spot or zone AF it will kick into Face + Tracking automatically if your subject falls off the AF points. Go to the Custom Controls, select the AF-ON and below is the Detail Set. Apparently you can set that up to do this but I have yet to try it. I'll get around to it. I read about it on another forum.

I found the R5's AF-ON location awkward so I programmed the * button as my only BBF for Servo. Now the AF-ON is used to toggle between the EVF and Display which I prefer to do manually.

In post #1352 I wondered why there were two options. Eye Detection AF and Eye Detection.

Eye Detection AF. If you assign this to a button then it will switch to Face + Tracking when you press it. You can be in single, spot or zone and it will kick into Face + Tracking.

Eye Detection. It just toggles back and forth between Eye detection and Non Eye Detection. It won't let me toggle back and forth in single, spot or zone AF and it does not kick into Face + Tracking automatically. I have to manually switch to Face+Tracking for it to work, which I prefer. I'm going to check the Detail Set options (paragraph 3) and see how that works when I'm in single, spot or zone AF. Sounds intriguing.

It is my original order.. I actually called and questioned it, I was put on hold for quite awhile while he was checking on it. Then said he believed it would be shipping today.. about 1/2 hour later I got the email.... almost makes me believe somehow it was lost in the shuffle.

Thanks. I am aware of this. I was hoping to get some real work experiences. I was directed to a Tiggy's testing of the various CFExpress cards that was helpful.

I'll be joining the R5 club soon. I got my order in today.
