I thought I had a handle on this but now I’m confused.
I thought you set up a button either AF-on or * to Eye Detection+ Tracking and that’s it. No? Then you set up the other button for AF single AF point with no eye detection or tracking for normal AF. What am I missing?

People do that but I didn't set it up that way. Nothing wrong with what you are doing.
I prefer to only use one BBF button for Servo which is typically AF-ON. I programmed the REC button to toggle between Eye Detection and non Eye Detection. I programmed the M-Fn button to toggle between Fv and C1-3 for my main AF modes. So when I'm in C2 = Face + Tracking or C3 Face + Tracking/Initial AF Point I can quickly toggle back and forth between Eye Detection and Non Eye Detection using the REC button.
When I'm in Fv = single point and C1 = Zone AF both don't offer Eye Detection so using the REC button doesn't do anything. However you can set it up so when you are in single point, spot or zone AF it will kick into Face + Tracking automatically if your subject falls off the AF points. Go to the Custom Controls, select the AF-ON and below is the Detail Set. Apparently you can set that up to do this but I have yet to try it. I'll get around to it. I read about it on another forum.
I found the R5's AF-ON location awkward so I programmed the * button as my only BBF for Servo. Now the AF-ON is used to toggle between the EVF and Display which I prefer to do manually.
In post #1352 I wondered why there were two options. Eye Detection AF and Eye Detection.
Eye Detection AF. If you assign this to a button then it will switch to Face + Tracking when you press it. You can be in single, spot or zone and it will kick into Face + Tracking.
Eye Detection. It just toggles back and forth between Eye detection and Non Eye Detection. It won't let me toggle back and forth in single, spot or zone AF and it does not kick into Face + Tracking automatically. I have to manually switch to Face+Tracking for it to work, which I prefer. I'm going to check the Detail Set options (paragraph 3) and see how that works when I'm in single, spot or zone AF. Sounds intriguing.
