I think this was answered but I am the type that has to ask something multiple times and read the answer even more...

Most of my BIF, maybe 70%, the birds are over 100 yards away, some up to 250-300 yards, it is a limitation of where I shoot. When they are less than 100 yards they are usually Canada Geese or Swans floating around, sometimes they will take to flight, but not that often.

On my 5D IV and 7D II most of the time the bird I am focusing on is not much bigger than the center AF point about the size of the center and the 5 assist points. If I wait for shots where they are frame filling I would get about 2 shots a week and I go out almost every day.

The question is about Animal Eye AF, listening here AE AF will be better when the birds are close enough to lock on the eye it will be better but if a bird is very small in the frame will it be any better than my current gear?

That question being asked, I am keeping my current stable through the winter into spring as I am at about 40k clicks on each camera and haven't had them very long and they work fine...

Update on teleconverters w/ my R5.

Brief background:
I had issues connecting 1.4x(v3) + ef12 + 2.0x(v3) + 100-400(v2) and having AF work (where this combo used to work, albeit slowly, with the 7d2/5d4/1dx2/1dx3). Whereas the combo in that configuration would not even allow my R5 to attempt to take pictures. Aperture read F00.

I worked around the issue by switching the order around (2x + ef12 + 1.4x) and the camera functioned, but I found AF to be wonky (at night, didn't test in the day).

What's happening now:
So a fellow member here was able to connect the 1.4x(v3) directly to the 2x(v2) on their EOS R (I believe) and that was working, no need for the ef12 tube.

So I ordered a 9+ used condition 2x(v2) and it just arrived in my pudgy paws.

Yes indeed, the 1.4x(v3) + 2x(v2) connects beautifully and with the 100-400(v2), R5 focuses quickly as expected.

However, just for kicks, I opted to attach 2x(v3) + 2x(v2) + 100-400(v2) and the combo works (day time at least). And the AF is no slouch! So unless my math is wonky, which it very likely is, this can give me an "effective reach" of 1600mm. With AF. (Aperture reading on the camera still reads, incorrectly f/11 with the 2x/2x combo.)

Soooooo, with some luck (though the nights have been super hazing where I live), I'm going to test the 2x/2x combo soon on the moon and then see if I can snap Jupiter again. (Not sure if Saturn is still up there but I'll check.)

(I should actually go see if I can get the 1.4x + 2x(2) + ef12 + 2x(3) connected and see if that works. Hahaha....)

*update*

I just tried to connect 1.4x + 2(2) + ef12 + 2(3) and got F00 again. No joy. Oh well, can't say I didn't try.

Ohhh nooooooo. :-( My R5 needs a repair already. I have NEVER broken something on a camera like this before :-(

I was out shooting and had my R5 with 500 mm lens hanging in the lens strap and I had to open a gate and the camera swung into the door and something hit the viewfinder so the front glas broke. Fortunately the lcd screen is working fine and the broken glass does not hinder me from using the camera but the glass need to be replaced just don't know how long it will take or how much it will cost :-(

So I havent sent the camera in for repair yet. I wanted to check first about potential cost and availability of parts.

Got response on my email today. The good news is that the parts is available at our service center so they can repair it immediately. Hopefully my CPS membership will benefit me for this for a quick repair time. My level should give me 2 days fast track repair.

The bad news is that it will probably cost around $500 to $600 :-(

Yeouch, you'd think that part would be cheaper to replace. I've always considered it as a sort of protective cover for the viewfinder on any camera I've owned, not that I've tested that theory.

Yeah apparently the glass is an integral part of the viewfinder so it is not just the glass that need to be replaced :-(

This is a reply to a few topics mentioned. The Canon Elan II Eye had what was Eye Controlled Auto Focus. The photographer selects focusing point by looking at it and follows the subject with the eye. I would prefer this on a new modern camera. Not sure at all but I think eye detection is the subjects eyes being detected.
I feel your pain when shopping for photographic equipment.
I had no idea how bad the prices are for other people shopping for cameras. July 2019 to 30th June 2020. The national minimum wage for this period is $740.78 per week, or $19.49 an hour.
The USA federal minimum wage in 2020 is $7.25 per hour and has not increased since July 2009. However, some states, cities, and counties have a higher minimum wage rate.
For a moment I thought I was being super cheap by ordering a $2499.99 Canon 5D IV and not paying $3899.99 USD for the R5

You should get a 20% discount on the repair with CPS, right?

What you have is 1600mm; not "effective".

I inquired about a 2015 camera body if a shutter repair could be made years later. The person I spoke to said they have support for some 2006 camera models.

He is showing distorted balls and goal posts with electronic shutters and he wasnt real happy with eye focus. He says to stick to single point---also....So many frames to go through with electronic shutter use

he is a 1Dx2 shooter and prefers it to the R5 for sports work

Positive reports for portrait work

This is exactly why anyone who wants/needs to shoot more than 8 frames per second on a regular basis may want to hold out until the EOS R1 is announced next year. Having 'big boy batteries' like the existing 1D series will help solve the frame rate below 60% battery capacity issue.

I don't need more than 8 frames per second so I'm OK with the 60% battery limitation, but someone who buys the R5 expecting 12 frames per second all the time needs to know this limitation before dropping their hard earned cash.

Or get the battery grip. I was shooting in green H+ mode until both batteries were around 30% a couple weeks ago when I was out at the local Air Force base. I shot over 6000 clicks before the frame rate dropped and the icon when to a white H+. Also, that was using the older LP-E6N batteries, not the newer H batteries as well.

I am not sure but hope so. On my account it says 10% on maintenance and I don't really see this as maintenance.
