With f14 you need a lot of light. Did you check in the exif if the flash fired(ie did the camera know)?

Did you check in the exif if the flash fired(ie did the camera know)? Cables can give all sorts of problems especially if you are moving about. IIRC it did not know in some cases but others it did.
