Are you sure the flash fired for the high iso shots?

Yes because it completly blanked them. I was firing the flash via a cable - which I think was causing the problem.

In that case I think the camera did not recognise the flash and raised the iso to get a good exposure. With f14 you need a lot of light. Did you check in the exif if the flash fired(ie did the camera know)?
Cables can give all sorts of problems especially if you are moving about.

IIRC it did not know in some cases but others it did.
I have just stopped using the cable - sadly too tricky.
