I was taking pictures at home..... and I left the lens on the couch. Little did I realize it was near the edge, so when I sat down, the lens rolled down and hit the floor and broke in two pieces. It is something like this (not my lens): https://www.google.com …1327#imgrc=TGLVv3HmiKBhmM (external link)

Is this repairable? There is a camera shop near my work where I can stop by and ask. Depending of cost, if it is repairable, maybe I might just get another one if not worth it. Of course, would rather get it repaired, but this is first time a lens breaks so I don't know what to expect. Thanks in advanced.

Given how cheap the lens is to buy, I'd suggest just getting a new one. It also means you have the opportunity to upgrade, depending on your finances.

Sometimes people are able to snap the lens back together, there have been success stories. Have you tried?

That would be a pretty good upgrade.

Here's a comparison between the 1.8 and the 1.4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYhJK3-4Kgk (external link)

Be careful with that lens too, it has known issues. The focus track can get bound up over time due to some poor engineering.

Might be worth looking at aftermarket 50mm as well or the Canon 1.8 50 STM.

Thanks for the link Tiberus.

TeamSpeed, thank you for the headsup. Would this be the one you are referring to: https://www.adorama.com/ca5018stm.html (external link)

Yes that is the newest in the 50 1.8 lineup from Canon (5 years old at this point).

I would suggest the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM over this lens. I owned the 50mm f/1.4 and did not care for the auto focus motor, and the lens can be fragile. The 50mm f/1.8 STM is less expensive, and the STM auto focus motor is better than the fake USM motor in the f/1.4.

I really wish Canon would make a decent 50mm f/1.4. Maybe they will do so in the RF line up -- I gave up years ago with the EF line up and bought a 50mm f/1.2 L.

I've seen many episodes of needed repairs for the F/1.4. Not just online, I knew couple people that preferred the F/1.8. I really like the nifty fifty, it's pretty good for the $. Use the $ for the 85mm F/1.8 instead of the 50mm F/1.4. ;-)a

I'd agree with the argument towards replacing instead of repairing.

I am able to buy the 1.4 but if it may have problems down the road, I rather get the 1.8. Sure would like the 1.2, but my wallet says "hell no!" lol. I do have the 85mm, which I got used. Do like it, but I don't have much room to be able to use the 85mm at home so I opt for the 50mm and a different lens. Thanks for the help guys.

The f/1.8 is shown on the Canon refurb site at $91 but out of stock. But the point is at $91 your existing lens is not economical to repair. The f/1.4 is shown in stock, refurb, at $278. If you can’t swing that the f/1.8 STM is available at $90. See https://shop.usa.canon.com …50mm-f-18-stm-refurbished (external link)

By the way, what body are you using with this lens?

I would buy the 50 1.8 STM over the 1.4. The 1.8 STM is a really good lens and the 1.4 has known focus ribbon problems.

6D, 6DII, 70D, 80D, R10, RP, Lumix DC-FZ80 and a bag full of lenses.

See my reply (#12). The Canon refurb is $90. These are often demo lenses, excess stock from stores closing, etc. They are essentially in like “new” condition, just can’t be sold as such. They come with an exchange privilege and the same warranty as new.

John, using it on a 80D. Will check your link. If the same, I don't mind saving a few $$. Thanks.

Thanks for the input greenjeans, another tally for the 1.8
