I apologize if this question has been answered before. Does R5 overheat in 4K 60p crop mode as well?

No need for you to apologize, after all the topic is “R6 (and maybe R5) overheating issue.”

Perhaps for those that have questions about focusing with the R6/R5, a thread specifically on that subject would be in order.

Thanks Buddy

This is great information

Gonna place an order after January bridal shows

You're going to love it! Really a great camera for stills, and video too especially the way I use it. I know I've been talking for over a year now but I'm finally going to make the YouTube video before this month is over. I have lots to talk about and a few more videos to follow in order to get into more detail on specific things.

I'll let you know when it's posted.

I can hardly wait for mine. My 100-500 is complaining to me it needs to expand its horizons as the R is just not enough for it. My new CFexpress card and reader are getting lonely.

I do seriously enjoy a Roger Cicala tear down of a pricey bit of kit. Great article. one of the unsung highlights of the R5 lost in this overheating issue, it looks to be one of the most highly weather sealed Canon cameras of all time. Impressive.

Very weather sealed, very impressive minus the heat buildup that it causes.

Also he does a much better job than Andrew Reid about showing the two different heatsinks built around the main board, from both sides. Finally he really shows how packed the insides are and all the layers from the bottom perspective.

The new 1.1.1 firmware for the R6 is now up and downloadable on the USA Canon site.

Strong rumors now of an R5s with 90meg+. Wonder if it will come with a built-in fire suppression system?

Good news about the R5 firmware update when shooting stills. The new firmware seems to have prevented the temperature warning icon showing up.

Yesterday I shot a short wedding with one EOS R5 body (A) with firmware 1.1.0 and the other EOS R5 body (B) with firmware 1.0.0.

After about 285 images (cameras were both powered on for 2 hours by the time I noticed) I saw the temperature warning icon on my B camera (firmware 1.0.0).

Hosted photo: posted by Jared5 in
./showthread.php?p=19121873&i=i72653208
forum: Canon Digital Cameras

The A body with firmware 1.1.0 did not have the temperature warning icon on at all, and I had even shot more images with that body.

Here's the breakdown:

  • EOS R5 (body A) - firmware 1.1.0 - powered on for 2 hours - 594 images shot - no temperature warning
  • EOS R5 (body B) - firmware 1.0.0 - powered on for 2 hours - 285 images shot - temperature warning

After getting the temperature warning icon on camera B I was able to power it off and back on again a few seconds later and the temperature icon was gone.

Also, camera B slightly froze up on me. I say slightly because by the time I pulled my phone out to take a picture of the frozen screen (which was like an instant playback of the last image I took) it cleared up and I was able to continue shooting. I wanted to take a picture with my phone to reference it before pulling the batteries, and even though my phone is in a holster on my belt I was still not able to get a picture of it before it cleared up.

No temperature or lockup issues with camera A and the most recent firmware.

For those following along...
Yes, the two batteries in the grip were at about 50% capacity after the camera was on for a little over 2 hours and I'd only shot 285 images.

I should have compared battery capacity on both bodies at this point but I was too busy to think about it but I did change the batteries in camera B before the wedding was over. I didn't run the batteries all the way down to the blinking red battery indicator but I didn't want to push it to that point so I changed them out a little early. Camera A didn't require a battery change at all.

As tempted as I am to upgrade the firmware in camera B I'm going to test it out one more time at another wedding this weekend and see what else I can learn before upgrading.

Now that firmware 1.1.1 is out I'll update body A and continue with firmware 1.0.0 on body B through the weekend. I have a video project on Friday and a wedding (stills) on Saturday. After that I think I'll be satisfied enough in my results to run both bodies with the latest firmware after testing this weekend.

I don't see much reason to test firmware 1.1.0 against 1.1.1, but if anyone else has input please let me know.

This latest firmware send to address specific 100-500 lens issues and nothing more. I see no reason to test it unless we think Canon snuck other things into the firmware.

That is not true.

Here is the list and yes it is the R6 list:

Firmware Version 1.1.1 incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

1. A messaging is displayed when [HDMI display: Camera+External monitor] and [Overheat control: on] settings are both enabled.
2. When the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is attached, an image stabilization effect of approximately six stops* is achieved through collaborative control with the in-lens image stabilization.
*Focal length 500mm, Based on CIPA(Camera & Imaging Products Association) standards.
3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the IS capabilities may be degraded when performing continuous shooting in cases where the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens is attached to the EOS R6 running firmware version 1.1.0.
4. When using certain RF lenses for movie shooting, the in-lens image stabilization mechanism has been improved.
5. Fixes a phenomenon in which the "Slow Synchro" setting screen is not accurately displayed, when the language is set to English.
6. Fixes a typo displayed on the communication setting screen, when the language is set to Korean.
7. Connectivity during FTP transmission has been improved.
8. Temperature detection and shooting time control in video shooting have been improved. In addition, the total shooting time when the short-time recording and power-on/off are performed repeatedly at room temperature is improved.
9. The phenomenon in which the movie recording time available is not correctly displayed when the Date/Time/Zone is not set has been corrected.

I’m pretty sure that’s just listing what’s in both FW updates and not just 1.1.1.

If you’re at 1.0.0 and you download this most recent update you’d be brought up to speed with all updates. If you’re already at 1.1.0 you’d only gain the benefit of the RF 100-500 stuff.

That makes sense except this was the first update available for the R6 at least to my knowledge. Was that an R5 thing, the two updates?

I am quite sure the R6 shipped with the 1.1.0 update, mine came from the store with it anyways. Maybe the R6's 1.1.0 is different than the R5's, not sure. Canon is very confusing on this, as they don't talk about 1.1.0 on the R6 or have it listed as a previous version, etc. However they have been shipped with that version.

I wonder if Canon quietly updated R6s with the new 1.1.0 firmware so that they didn't continue to have an onslaught of overheating vlogs. The R6s weren't available for almost a month after the R5. However some folks received their R6 with version 1.0.0, and they aren't able to upgrade the firmware to 1.1.0, so again this is very puzzling, as to why Canon did this update secretly on some and didn't make the firmware available to the rest of the world.

Version 1.1.1 has these following release notes, at least for the R5, so it's not a big update unless you have a 100-500.

Firmware (Version 1.1.1) incorporates the following improvements and fixes:

When the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is attached, image stabilization of 6.0 steps is now possible when used in conjunction with the optical image stabilization mechanism of a compatible lens.
When the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is attached, the IS performance during continuous shooting may deteriorate with firmware Version 1.1.0. This phenomenon has been corrected.

So What Did We Learn Today?

What I learned is just how complicated a gadget these cameras have become. Just crammed with electronics now.
