I suspect it may be a youngster in its first summer, because of the unique facial profile and the fact there are no scars on the ears. . And the fur is perfect, whereas all of the mature Pika I see have imperfections and gaps in their coats.

Cottontail Rabbits do not dig burrows, but they prefer to live in them because of the protection they offer from predators. . So I have found that Cottontails are more prevalent in Prairie Dog towns than they are in similar habitat that doesn't have Prairie Dogs, presumably due to the abundance of readily available burrows.

Very nice capture Tom

On a side note, we talked about the Columbia Gorge Pikas a while back. Mid April I took a trip to the coast and did some exploring on way. I took a few 5 or 6 mile round trip hikes in a few areas. I didn't find any Pika, but Shellrock Mountain looked promising. I think I may have hiked in the wrong area. I will probably take another trip sometime this fall and try it again.

I have found quite a few in the Eagle Cap Wilderness near Lostine Oregon. There are a lot of hikers on the trails, but out in the boulderfields it is pretty clear of interruptions.
Beautiful area as well. I also saw another Pine Martin in the same area.

Here is what I believe to be the difference between a young Pika (top) and a fully mature, older Pika (bottom).

They don't just look different because one is shedding and the other isn't, although that is a factor of age as first year Pikas don't shed (obviously). . The head and face contours are different, the body musculature is different, the ears are embattled, etc.

Spent quite a bit of time last summer photographing Brown Hares locally. Staying low and quiet, they could come right up to touching distance, too close to focus.

Yellowstone, Sheepeater Cliff, last May.

Two things I found funny about photographing pikas there: 1) Standing there with my tripod and large lens, and having tourists walk up, look at me, then the rocks, then back at me with a puzzled look on their faces, and 2) later on one of the days, having six photographers with our thousands of dollars of camera equipment, all pointed at the rocks hoping the pika would re-emerge.
