F35 coming in for landing at Luke AFB. I was about to toss this whole string as the exposure just looked to be a mess but decided to mess a bit with everything and I was surprised at how much range was left. I'll attach the original as well for fun. This was taken at 2PM on a very sunny day here in Phoenix, but it's hard to tell from the end result!

Thanks very much Russell. I'm fortunate to live across the street from several square miles of land preserve which provides a lot of wildlife for me to photograph.

A few shots from Luke Air Force base with the 100-500 and RF 2x converter attached. The 2x converter is a bit much here, and I think the 1.4x converter is better suited instead, with the rare exception of a shot of a jet taxiing. At 1000mm the lens is at f/14, and even in the bright AZ sun I was still usually pushing ISO 1600-2500, add to that any atmospheric haze or heat and it does make it hard to get a sharp shot with good detail. Now, not impossible, just hard. Add to that, where I usually am the 600-1000mm range is too much so that made tracking pretty difficult as well.

The 600mm end was actually quite good, but again if I wanted that I would drop down to the 1.4 as it would be much more useable overall.

Would I use it for flight shots? No. Only if I really needed to and there was no other way. But overall I think the 1.4x and a bit of cropping would be a better solution
Would I use it for slower ground shots? Yes. On the right days (cool with a bit of cloud cover) you could get some nice clear shots with this at good distance I think and lower the shutter speed so that ISO isn't as much of an issue

So far the 2x, with the RF 100-500, does really well when you can control the shutter speed and have a slow/still subject. I think when Canon releases the RF "big white" lenses this thing will really shine though.

I'll be out this weekend at the wetland preserve and see how it does on some of the local birds...should be interesting.

This is 1000mm uncropped on an F35 coming in for landing. Needless to say it's a bit much and pretty hard to keep properly framed! When the subjects are close the detail is really good though
